Summary

Historically, many moms have chosen careers, but that tendency appears to be changing. These women, who are willing to make financial and personal sacrifices in order to be the primary caretakers for their tiny children, are drawn to their home and pastime. Numerous women have returned to being primary caregivers at home, and hobby skills can assist them in overcoming the financial obstacles associated with being a single-income family.

Cooking is one hobby that assists the mother at home. While cooking and baking could be considered work, they are intriguing hobbies. One can travel the world's cuisines or learn to make gourmet delicacies. Baking can provide nutritious whole grain goods at a fraction of the cost of store-bought loaves.

Another useful household and pastime skill is stitching on a sewing machine. Numerous homemakers are creating quilts that are works of beauty by recycling discarded fabrics into squares and other shapes and artfully arranging the materials. Other important sewing abilities for stay-at-home moms include mending, altering, and making garments. When women are questioned about their favorite pastimes, stitching frequently ranks first.

Some mothers and their spouses take an active role in house remodeling, and hobby carpentry skills come in handy. One-income families can keep their costs of living down by learning to "do it yourself," a term so frequently used that it has been reduced to "diy." The Internet has made it simple to acquire information about repairing and renovating homes, furnishings, and other personal possessions.

New Life in Christ is a multi-volume anthology of the writings and sermons written and presented by Dr. Strem during his many years in pastoral ministry. These volumes present the breadth of Christian theology in a personal and informal manner that serves to address the application of Christian faith in daily life. Written during a time when there is a great need for discipleship in the community of Christian faith, Dr. Strem addresses that need by organizing the material in a manner that may be used both as a reference text on theological subjects and for instruction in Christian living. -- Dr Jack Carter, General Editor, The Journal of Biblical Theology.
Dr. Strem has been a mentor and disciple-maker for me and my family for twenty years. Faithfully teaching God’s Word so that both the layman and the scholar are able to understand, Dr. Strem has also remained a friend in the work of the ministry, benefiting the church and the community with love and hard work. I highly recommend these years of teaching in this written word to those who want to grow well in Christ. -- Donna Arthur - Editor and Teacher -- Trinity EFC
Dave Strem has been a faithful, loyal preacher of Jesus for decades! In this book you'll see the heart of a man that uses God's word mixed with his own creativity, stories, and a unique passion for life to help you fall more in love with Jesus! -- Zach Zehnder -- Lead Pastor -- theCross.family

A bracingly original, revelatory debut that explores cooking and the kitchen as sources of pleasure, constraint, and revolution, by a rising star in food writing

This joyful, revelatory work of memory and meditation both complicates and electrifies life in the kitchen.

Why do we cook? Is it just to feed ourselves and others? Or is there something more revolutionary going on?

In Small Fires, Rebecca May Johnson reinvents cooking—that simple act of rolling up our sleeves, wielding a knife, spattering red hot sauce on our books—as a way of experiencing ourselves and the world. Cooking is thinking: about the liberating constraint of tying apron strings; the transformative dynamics of shared meals; the meaning of appetite and bodily pleasure; the wild subversiveness of the recipe, beyond words or control.

Small Fires shows us the radical potential of the thing we do every day: the power of small fires burning everywhere.

THE INSTANT #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
From award-winning writer Nigel Slater, comes a new and exquisitely written collection of notes, memoir, stories and small moments of joy.
'Nigel Slater’s prose is the rarest delicacy of all: exquisite yet effortless, filled with heart, tenderness, yearning and humour' ELIZABETH DAY
For years, Nigel Slater has kept notebooks of curiosities and wonderings, penned while at his kitchen table, soaked in a fisherman’s hut in Reykjavik, sitting calmly in a moss garden in Japan or sheltering from a blizzard in a Vienna Konditorei.
These are the small moments, events and happenings that gave pleasure before they disappeared. Miso soup for breakfast, packing a suitcase for a trip and watching a butterfly settle on a carpet, hiding in plain sight. He gives short stories of feasts such as a mango eaten in monsoon rain or a dish of restorative macaroni cheese and homes in on the scent of freshly picked sweet peas and the sound of water breathing at night in Japan.
This funny and sharply observed collection of the good bits of life, often things that pass many of us by, is utter joy from beginning to end.
‘I loved this. It is a secular book of hours – thoughts and pleasures beautifully cadenced and generously placed’ Edmund de Waal
‘Nigel Slater has a magical capacity to find beauty in the smallest moments. A nourishing, sustaining book’ Olivia Laing
‘His evocative, uplifting observations are a balm for life: a prose-poem for eaters and a spiritual companion for thoughtful cooks. A true and enduring joy’ Nigella Lawson
‘You can’t always feel buoyant and grateful but noticing – and getting pleasure from – the seemingly insignificant is a good way to live. As he says, feel the “small moments of joy”’ Diana Henry
Nigel Slater, a top author and best-seller, continues to captivate with his culinary narratives and non-fiction essays. His travelogues, filled with the scent of freshly picked sweet peas and the sound of water breathing at night in Japan, are a testament to his ability to find beauty in the smallest moments.
For fans of Wendy Macnaughton (Lost Cat), Rick Stein (Under a Mackerel Sky), Alice Waters (Always Home), and Stanley Tucci (What I Ate in One Year).
