Summary

In Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein (Gothic Classic - The Uncensored 1818 Edition)', readers are transported into a world of science, ambition, and the consequences of playing God. Through the haunting tale of Victor Frankenstein and his creation, Shelley explores themes of power, responsibility, and the essence of humanity. The novel is written in a style that combines Gothic elements with philosophical reflections, making it a compelling and thought-provoking read. The descriptive prose and eerie atmosphere add to the overall impact of the story, drawing readers into a world of fear and moral ambiguity. 'Frankenstein' stands as a testament to Shelley's literary prowess and enduring influence on the horror genre. Mary Shelley's personal experiences, including the loss of her own child and the challenges of being a female writer in the 19th century, likely influenced her creation of this timeless masterpiece. Her unique perspective and imaginative storytelling have solidified her place in literary history. I highly recommend 'Frankenstein' to readers who enjoy thought-provoking narratives, Gothic literature, and exploring the depths of human nature.

From 1941 to 1947, the United States planted a liaison mission in the headquarters of Chinese Communist forces behind the lines. Nicknamed the "Dixie Mission," for its location in "rebel" territory, it was an interagency delegation that included intelligence officers from the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).

Mission to Mao is a social history of the OSS officers in the field that reveals the weakness of United States intelligence diplomacy in the 1940s. Drawing on over 14,000 unpublished records from five archives as well as white papers and memoirs from the participants, Sara B. Castro demonstrates how the OSS officers clashed with political appointees and Washington over the direction of the United States relationship with the Chinese Communists. Initially, the OSS officers were sent to gather intelligence that would help the war effort against Japan, but interagency and political conflicts erupted over whether the mission would later involve operations with the Communists. Castro shows how potential benefits for the war effort were thwarted by politicization and the OSS officers' own biases and blind spots.

Mission to Mao is a fresh look at United States intelligence in World War II China and takes listeners beyond the history of "China hands" versus American anticommunists, introducing more nuance.

Here, Kant lays down the cornerstones of ethical behavior, propelled by the famous 'categorical imperative' that guides actions by universal maxims. This work delves into the nature of free will, the concept of duty, and the moral law within, presenting a compelling argument for autonomy and rationality in ethical decision-making. A foundational text, it is essential for understanding moral agency and integrity. Read in English, unabridged.

A look at the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the plant specimens the great explorers gathered on their way—and of their amazing afterlife.Elizabeth Adelman's Chasing the Missing Monkeyflower is the two hundred-year saga of finding, losing, and finding the wild plants collected on America's first exploration west, the Lewis and Clark Expedition.Thomas Jefferson handpicked Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition, gather notable specimens along the way, and then write the journals, with one volume to include science-worthy descriptions and classifications of the plants that Lewis collected and pressed to preserve. Not a botanist, Lewis needed help to write this part of the journals.Ambition, deceit, theft, wealth, debt, alcoholism, loss, suicide, serendipity, and stubborn persistence cross the plants' paths in Philadelphia, New York, and London. This is the first work detailing the places, practices, and times of a cavalcade of people who touched the plants. A fascinating chronicle of an unexplored byway of the great American story.
