Due to this act of civil disobedience and her public confrontation of the Italian far right and the structural racism of the EU's Fortress Europe policy, Carola became a powerful symbol for people seeking to take practical action for a world based on justice and equality. Carola has worked in the polar regions since 2011 and holds a degree in natural resources management. Consequently, her book shows how the ecological crises we are facing today are rooted in social and political power structures. The book details moments of the rescue mission but also connects the dots to forced migration and the urgency of our environmental predicament.   The Shang Dynasty, often considered the first historically confirmed dynasty of ancient China, marked the beginning of a new era in Chinese civilization. Flourishing from around 1600 to 1046 BCE, the Shang established a highly organized society, developed a complex system of governance, and made significant advancements in art, technology, and culture. Their rise to power followed the decline of the Xia Dynasty, an era that remains shrouded in legend, with little concrete archaeological evidence to confirm its existence. The emergence of the Shang brought structure, stability, and a more defined political system, setting the foundation for future dynasties. 
  According to traditional Chinese historical accounts, the Shang Dynasty was founded by Tang, a ruler known for his wisdom and leadership. He is said to have overthrown the last Xia king, who was notorious for his tyranny and misrule. This transition of power was not merely a change in leadership but a transformation of governance, as the Shang kings implemented a more centralized authority, strengthening their control over vast territories. The establishment of their capital, which shifted multiple times during the dynasty’s rule, demonstrated their adaptability and strategic planning. The most well-documented capital, Yinxu (near present-day Anyang), provides extensive archaeological evidence of Shang civilization.

After her parents' divorce, Vanessa traveled with her mother to Lyon and later to London, eventually settling in Reno, Nevada, as a teenager, right around the financial crisis and the collapse of the housing market. At twenty, still a practicing evangelical Christian and newly married, Vanessa applied to and was accepted by Harvard Law School, where she was one of the youngest members of her class. There, she forged a new belief system, divorced her husband, left the church, and pursued a career in economic justice upon graduation.

Is it the country we're born in, the body we possess, or the name we were given and that identifies us?   The Marauders uncovers the riveting nonfiction saga of far-right militias terrorizing the border towns of southern Arizona. In one of the towns profiled, Arivaca, rogue militia members killed a man and his nine-year-old daughter in 2009. In response, the residents organized and spent two years trying to push  the new militias out through boycotts and by urging local businesses to  ban  them. The militias and vigilante groups again raised the stakes, spreading Pizzagate-style conspiracy theories alleging that town residents were complicit in child sex trafficking, prompting fears of vigilante violence. 
   
    
   
  The Marauders flips the standard formula most often applied to stories about immigration and the far right. Too often those stories are told from the perspective of the ones committing the violence. While Strickland doesn't shy away from exploring those dark themes, the far right are not the protagonists of the book. Rather, the people targeted by hate groups, and the individuals who rose up to stop them in their tracks, are the heroes of this dramatic story.
