Synopsis

Mary Roberts Rinehart's "The Greatest Works of Mary Roberts Rinehart" is a compelling anthology that encapsulates the author's mastery in the mystery genre, characterized by her innovative narratives and vivid characterizations. Renowned for pioneering the 'Had-I-but-known' style, Rinehart intertwines suspense and wit, echoing the societal contexts of early 20th-century America. Through her groundbreaking plots, often set against the backdrop of war and societal change, she crafts intricate mysteries that immerse the reader in both intrigue and moral complexity. Rinehart, often dubbed the 'American Agatha Christie,' drew her inspiration from her varied life experiences, including her work as a nurse during World War I and her observations of domestic life. Her keen insights into human nature and social structures informed her writing, allowing her to create relatable characters and suspenseful scenarios that resonated with her contemporaries. This collection not only highlights her skillful storytelling but also her role in shaping the landscape of American literature, as she deftly navigated the expectations of her time. This anthology is recommended for both enthusiasts of the mystery genre and those interested in early American feminist literature. About this book:.
    The story of a psychopath.
Karl Liebknecht - the main character of this novel - loses his young wife and parents on the same day in a car accident caused by a drunk Yugoslav lorry driver. Liebknecht, a conscientious case worker at the social welfare office, withdraws more and more into himself until one day he unintentionally kills a young Yugoslavian girl. He tells himself that she was 'only' a member of the same people who had killed his family. Liebknecht comes into contact with neo-Nazi circles and begins to hunt down foreign drug dealers and prostitutes. Initially, the victims are merely beaten up - but later Liebknecht, who has begun to steel his body through strength training, switches to locking the victims in his cellar and then murdering them. Liebknecht kidnaps the wife of Inspector Werner, who suspected the real perpetrator very early on but was unable to produce any evidence, and makes her play sex games with three Africans in front of a hidden camera. Liebknecht sends the recorded videos to the press and police and begins a game of cat and mouse to break free from the boredom of daily monotony. The inspector's assistant detective is also kidnapped and murdered. Liebknecht transforms from a staid civil servant into a sarcastic monster, but loves his black housekeeper Agatha, who supports him wholeheartedly in his perverse misdeeds....

When private eyes Sam Blackman and Nakayla Robertson are asked by an eighty-year-old client to investigate the death of her brother, they warn her there is little chance of success. Paul Weaver died nearly seventy years earlier. The only documentation she has is the sole surviving copy of a coroner's report stating his death was caused by an accidental fall while hiking.

There's a red flag: Weaver knew every inch of the mountain trails. The returning World War II veteran had enrolled at Black Mountain College, a liberal local school with an international reputation for innovation. The college of the 1940s is currently being portrayed in a film being shot on the site of its former location. The plot is based on a book by a local author. The research behind both may provide a lead in the Weaver case. One is drawn from movie crew member Harlan Beale, an octogenarian mountaineer who knew Weaver. Beale is discovered dead in the Black Mountain College Museum. His murder turns the cold case white hot. When a second killing follows, the question becomes how to separate dark doings in the present from dark days and hidden scars of the post-war past.

Nakayla and Sam love their investigations and each other. An interracial couple in the South, they've surrounded themselves with a terrific support team.
