Sinopsis

In "The Greatest Murder Mysteries of Mary Roberts Rinehart," readers are presented with a compelling anthology that highlights Rinehart's mastery in the detective genre. Comprising 25 of her most notable works, this collection showcases her innovative narrative style, characterized by suspenseful plotting and rich character development. Rinehart, often hailed as the "American Agatha Christie," effectively combines elements of gothic literature with early 20th-century societal themes, reflecting the anxieties of her era while keeping readers engaged in intricate puzzles and thrilling twists. Mary Roberts Rinehart was a pioneering figure in American literature, whose career spanned over five decades. Born in 1876, Rinehart's work was greatly influenced by her experiences as a nurse during the Spanish-American War and her keen observations of societal norms and domestic life. Her unique perspective and acute understanding of human psychology allowed her to create complex narratives that challenged the traditional roles of women, blending mystery with social commentary, often making her a precursor to modern detective fiction. This anthology is a must-read for both dedicated fans of Rinehart's work and newcomers to the genre. As it delves into the thematic intricacies and narrative brilliance of her stories, readers will not only enjoy the suspenseful plots but also gain insights into the cultural milieu of her time. A perfect addition for lovers of classic mystery literature, it invites exploration of the nuanced characterizations and clever plots that have made Rinehart a beloved figure in crime fiction.

Evelyn May Clowes was born on 7th May 1872 in Cotgrave, Nottinghamshire.

Growing up in genteel circumstances, her early childhood was spent at Charlton Down House near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and her teenage years near Heythrop in the Cotswolds.

She was educated at home by governesses, excelling at German, Latin, Greek, shorthand, landscape painting, and fabric and wallpaper design.

In 1897 she went to Mauritius as companion to her cousin Caroline and in 1898 married Maurice Wilhemn Wiehe, the owner of a sugar plantation. She gave birth to two stillborn children. After a few years of marriage, she found life difficult and returned to England. Shortly afterwards she went by herself to Australia, arriving in June 1902 and gave birth to a son a few months later.

She lived in Melbourne for about eight years. To earn a living she took on a wide and varied range of jobs; she edited a woman's fashion paper, wrote short stories and articles, made blouses, designed embroideries, tilled gardens, acted as a housekeeper, and did other artistic work. Her health was not strong, but she undertook any kind of work which would provide a living for herself and her infant son. This gained her an experience of life which was readily put to use in her literary works.

Her first book, ‘The Garden of Contentment’, was published in 1902 under her pen-name Elinor Mordaunt. It was the first of many works that covered fiction, short stories, travel and autobiography.

She changed her name by deed poll to Evelyn May Mordaunt on 1st July 1915 and gained a further reputation as a writer of short stories for magazines which display both her humour and sense of tragedy. Travel was always high on her priority and the experiences used not only for pleasure but in her writings and, as travel books, ideas in themselves.

On 27th January 1933 at Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, she married a retired barrister from Gloucestershire. In her own words, the marriage ‘ended in tragedy.’

Elinor Mordaunt died on 25th June 1942 at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford. She was 70.

John Knox and Grace Chu, the incomparable duo of the Risk Agent novels, team up again in the latest international thrill ride from New York Times–bestselling author Ridley Pearson.

When ex–military contractor John Knox receives a text from partner Grace Chu warning that she fears her cover may have been blown while on assignment, he jumps into action. Knox must locate her overseas handlers, convince them of the threat, and then attempt to retrace the well-hidden steps of a woman who had been attempting to determine how one million euros’ worth of AIDS vaccine disappeared, all while eluding angry poachers on a parallel trail.

Corruption isn’t a “problem” in Kenya, it’s the way of doing business. The poaching of ivory from African elephants, driven by insatiable demand from mainland China, fuels constant blood and slaughter. Knox faces police, national rangers, journalists, and safari companies who are each in their own symbiotic relationship with elephants, both good and bad. As the threat from Al-Shaabab militants interferes with his pursuit of Grace, Knox finds himself pitted against the most savage and suicidal fighters in the world. And there’s this woman, Grace, always in his head. His gut. As Grace watches as her civilized self slips away while abandoned in the bush, Knox races against the clock to find her.

“Another perfectly calibrated installment in Pearson’s thriller world tour (with earlier stops in Shanghai, Amsterdam, and Istanbul); puzzling clues and immersive, full-sensory descriptions of Kenya balance cutthroat international criminal networks and teeth-clenching firefights.”—Booklist
