Summary

After losing her long-term partner, through poetry and essay, author Mary Deal shares the turmoil and oftentimes bewildering depths of her grief.

This memoir exposes the spectrum of emotions with which those suffering loss will become familiar or already experience. The author holds back nothing of her odyssey of despair. Her experiences and much she has learned to help herself provide other survivors a chance to see that they are not alone. Though everyone’s grief is different, all grief is surprisingly similar in its basis. Hope is found in familiarity with another’s grief and no one should endure the bereavement process alone.

Following the author’s progression through relentless sorrow, and finally redemption, lets others know there is validation for their emotional suffering. An easing of the pain occurs as the memory of loss takes its place among all other memories of the life shared with departed loved ones. This memoir offers helpful advice for survivors who endure their grief, until the puzzle of life meshes back together again in a new pattern.

An incredible journey of traumatic near-death moments, day to day drudgery, amusing situations, and brushes with greatness in World War II.

Life for a World War II paratrooper was grave and perilous; John H. Canfield's experience was no different. However, this young man found himself in so many crazy—sometimes humorous—situations that he almost forgot about how dangerous it was.

Filled with pranksters and superiors full of bravado and an unfortunate brush with racial bigotry with a fellow African American soldier, Canfield shares his many stories from basic training and jump school. But his best stories are from the war. From having to translate a dinner for an inebriated superior using his scant French, to getting chewed out by none other than General George S. Patton, Canfield shares a wealth of experiences from his WWII tour of the European theater.

In Small Victories in a Great Big War, John H. Canfield shows that half the battle is surviving, and that he did. With bravery and flair, Canfield returned home to Connecticut with more than a few amusing anecdotes.

More than seventy-five years after the end of World War II, John H. Canfield's stories are now shared with the world.

Lady Lay begins Lessons From The Stressors by recounting her upbringing in Washington, DC in the early 90s. From an early age, she exhibited subtle signs of anxiety and depression that would follow her into adulthood. She concealed this inner turmoil under the guise of people pleasing, shrinking, and collecting accolades. However, when her anxious tendencies and depressive episodes were intensified through trauma, she struggled to keep her condition concealed behind the facade of kindness and academic success. As she matured, her conditions intensified.
Gradually, Lady learned coping strategies to better manage her physical, emotional, and mental states. Through perseverance and self-care, she learned tools to alleviate her suffering just enough to start building herself back up. Those tools would ultimately assist with anticipating triggers, redirecting obsessive thoughts, and nurturing her overall mental health.
In her memoir, Lessons from the Stressors, Lady traces her journey from childhood into adulthood as she learns to understand, accept, and overcome the challenges of anxious and depressive episodes. The lessons from those stressors are shared in hopes that readers find their own light when dealing with darkness.

Then, Tonia sensed something was wrong. He started coming home late, spending more time traveling, and they were losing their connection. Her gut told her to start digging for answers. Her questions uncovered a web of lies and then a shocking truth: Tonia had married a sociopath. How could he have hidden the truth for so long? They had two children and seemingly normal, busy lives when Tonia discovered that John had been diverting drugs. She struggled to understand this level of deception. Little did she know this was just the beginning. The more questions Tonia had, the more distant and angry he became, accusing Tonia of sabotaging their marriage and blowing things out of proportion. With the devastating realization setting in that Tonia may not have known her husband at all, and the threat of divorce looming over her, Tonia must push herself to dig further into this mystery. The discovery of more dark secrets—aliases, affairs, a criminal record, and a dark family past—reveal that there is a story to be told, a story that can only be complete if John's previous victims, lovers, coworkers, and family are willing to come forward.
