Summary

From September 1939 until the last days of the war in 1945 Ireland was host to a constant flow of casualties from the Battle of the Atlantic. Ireland's unique location, situated near the vital shipping lanes of the Western Approaches, placed the country in the immediate conflict zone once the war at sea began with the sinking of the British merchant liner Athenia on 3 September 1939, when 449 survivors were landed in Galway city.

'Neutral Shores' follows the story of how many merchant navy ships during the war were attacked and sunk by German U-boats and FW200 bombers, and their surviving crews left adrift on the hostile Atlantic Ocean in a desperate struggle for survival.
For the fortunate ones sanctuary was found along Ireland's rugged Atlantic shores, where the local people took these men from the sea into their homes and cared for them without any consideration of their nationality or allegiances

The Republic of Ireland has changed much in the last few decades. It has become much more socially liberal, urban, secular and wealthy. It has also experienced large-scale immigration during a period when other Anglophone and many other European countries mainstream political parties have witnessed the exploitation of anti-immigrant nativism by some political mainstream parties as well as by the far right. Diverse Republic examines, as part of a wider focus on how immigration has changed Irish society, the emergence of antiimmigrant far-right groups through a focus on some key figures within these. It also considers the response of mainstream politics to immigration and examines efforts to encourage the integration of newcomers. The first part of the book examines how Irish society and identity has changed since the foundation of the state. This is relevant to the second part, which examines how and to what extent far right anti-immigration politics are likely to flourish or not in the Irish case. The second part of the book examines the appeal of far-right political responses to immigration in a context where some Irish citizens no longer appear to be represented by the political mainstream and where nativist populists lay claim to the symbols and heroes of the Republic.Diverse Republic makes the case for proactive measures to promote immigrant integration and social cohesion through citizenship, social policy and community development. It engages with shifting nationalist understandings of Irishness and makes the case for taking these seriously even if anti-immigrant nativist nationalism has found only fringe support in Irish politics to date. The symbols and history of what has become a diverse Republic should not become the property of those who would exclude some of its citizens.

What does it mean to be white? Beyond just a skin colour, is it also a way of thinking? If so, how did it come about, and why?

In this book, drawing on history, personal experience and activist literature, the former footballer and World Champion Lilian Thuram looks at the origins and workings of white thinking, how it divides us and how it has become ubiquitous and accepted without challenge. He demonstrates how centuries of white bias and denial justified slavery and colonialism, and have reinforced norms and structures of oppression, limiting the roles and horizons of both non-whites and whites alike.
Crucially, while White Thinking is a critique of ingrained structural inequities, it calls for an inclusive approach to solving the problem, and aims to raise awareness and imagine a new world in which all of humanity is given equal weight.
“White Thinking patiently demonstrates… how European societies, through their creation of Black people, also invented White people.” LE MONDE
“Strikes another blow in his battle against racial stereotypes.” LA VIE
“This book is not interested in repentance or white guilt but in the ability to face up to historical reality and to the fact that others might have a very different understanding of that history.” REVUE DES DEUX MONDES
“He is almost unique amongst retired sportspeople, having left his old life behind him in the dressing room. Today, the activist has replaced the footballer.” LIBÉRATION

"Nakano Takeko" is an exciting historical biography that delves into the life and legacy of Nakano Takeko, the extraordinary female warrior whose name became synonymous with bravery and honor.
Born into a samurai family in the mid-19th century, Nakano Takeko was trained in the art of war from a young age, mastering the deadly naginata with a skill that rivaled her male counterparts. As Japan teetered on the edge of a new era, Takeko found herself drawn into the heart of the conflict. Rejecting the traditional roles prescribed to women of her time, she carved her own path on the battlefield, leading a group of women warriors, the Jōshitai, in a courageous stand against the imperial forces during the Battle of Aizu.
"Nakano Takeko" is more than just a biography; it is a testament to the resilience and spirit of a true warrior. It celebrates the life of a woman who defied societal norms, leaving an indelible mark on history. Her story is one of inspiration, courage, and the relentless pursuit of honor, making this book a must-read for history enthusiasts, admirers of strong female figures, and anyone captivated by the samurai legacy.
