  This play is Glaspell’s recognition of the way in which Victorian society left some women feeling trapped in roles for which they were unsuited. Because of the play’s non-realistic speech patterns and expressionistic elements, it was dismissed by most critics as being muddled and confusing. It has recently been ‘‘rediscovered’’ by feminist theorists, however, who see the work as an important contribution to theatre history. In 1921 when this play was first produced, women were still expected to stay at home and be dutiful wives and mothers. Many women began to voice dissatisfaction with their lack of opportunities and tried to change the situation. Thus, the feminist movement began to take hold. Other women rebelled by retreating into despondency, depression and, sometimes, madness. The Verge also reflects the fascination with Freudian theory that was sweeping the United States at the time. Freud had delivered his first U.S. lectures in 1909, and his theories of psychoanalysis and dream interpretation were widely discussed in many popular publications of the day.   A collection of three medieval English poems, translated by Tolkien for the modern-day reader and containing romance, tragedy, love, sex and honour. 
  Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl are two poems by an unknown author written in about 1400. Sir Gawain is a romance, a fairy-tale for adults, full of life and colour; but it is also much more than this, being at the same time a powerful moral tale which examines religious and social values. 
  Pearl is apparently an elegy on the death of a child, a poem pervaded with a sense of great personal loss: but, like Gawain it is also a sophisticated and moving debate on much less tangible matters. 
  Sir Orfeo is a slighter romance, belonging to an earlier and different tradition. It was a special favourite of Tolkien’s. 
  The three translations represent the complete rhyme and alliterative schemes of the originals. 
  The collection of these epic poems, steeped in the rich history of Britain, offers a glimpse into the English, Welsh, and Scottish cultures during the period of 1066-1485. The tales, a blend of fantasy and reality, are a testament to the conquests and the Norman influence that shaped the European landscape.

He and the chauffeur Taylor, are both gay and in a relationship.Robert is tramping across the south of France, aiming to meet his friend and patient, Barty, in Italy. As part of the challenge he has set himself, he is working and hitching his way across to Italy, not having brought any cash or cards to finance his journey.Annabel is on her way back via Nice, to Monaco, after a gruelling business trip. She drives a top of the range red jaguar car.Annabel, on route from Nice airport, feeling exhausted and worried she might fall asleep at the wheel, parks in the car park at the start of the Promenade des Anglais, to take fresh air before driving on to Monaco.Robert is sleeping as a tramp under the promenade.Prostitutes are using the car park as a base in order to serve the airport trade.When Annabel is mugged she screams for help and is rescued by Robert.  Robert thinks she is a prostitute and she thinks he is an alcoholic tramp.  Subsequently, they sit together and as they converse, they warm to each other, but they don't expect their meeting to be more than a passing of two ships in the night.  But later they make love in her Jaguar.  They part, but don’t realise they have fallen in love.  The story shows how they get back together
