  On the cover of the book is Amaker’s great-great aunt Ruth Robinson, a poet and community leader who published her first book at the age of 65.

  MEET MARCUS.  
  Marcus Amaker is a husband, a dad, a son, a music nerd, and a Star Wars obsessive. He served as the first Poet Laureate of Charleston, South Carolina, from 2016-22. In 2021, he became an Academy of American Poets fellow.

Jackie Robinson's entry into Major League Baseball in 1947, when he became the first African American to play in the MLB, was a defining moment in the fight against racial discrimination in sports.   Similarly, gender barriers have been a significant challenge for female athletes. For many years, women were excluded from participating in major competitions, and the sports they were allowed to play were often seen as inferior. However, athletes like Billie Jean King, who defeated Bobby Riggs in the infamous "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match in 1973, helped to elevate women's sports and demonstrate that women were just as capable of excelling at the highest levels. King's victory wasn’t just a win in sports—it was a victory for gender equality and a powerful symbol of the struggle for women's rights.

  Burton Stephen Lancaster (November 2, 1913 - October 20, 1994), born in New York City, was an American actor, producer and director. Initially known for playing tough guys with a tender heart, he went on to achieve success with more complex and challenging roles over a 45-year career in films and television. He was a four-time Academy Award Best Actor nominee, winning the Oscar and Golden Globe for the 1960 film, Elmer Gantry, and BAFTA award winner for Birdman of Alcatraz (1963) and Atlantic City (1982).
