Sinopsis

An artist’s legacy lives on—through murder in this  Albert Campion mystery masterpiece from “one of the finest Golden-Age crime novelists” (The Sunday Telegraph).   To vex his rival from the grave, a famous artist has left twelve paintings to be sold after his death. Each year, one painting is revealed to kick off London’s art season. But this release party—bringing family, friends, critics, and collectors together—devolves into scandal. A power outage leaves everyone in the dark, and when the lights come back on, a man lies dead—stabbed through the heart with bejeweled scissors.   Family friend Albert Campion is present during the deadly crime. The too obvious suspect is the artist’s granddaughter, Linda Lafcadio, who was engaged to the victim until he brought back a model from Italy and married her. Linda didn’t take his suggestion of a ménage à trois well, to say the least. But was she angry enough to kill him? Campion thinks not. He’s actually quite sure he knows who did the dastardly deed, but there’s no evidence to prove it. And though he’s one step behind a diabolical killer, Campion just might be next on the list of victims . . .  “Uncommon merit in every direction . . . honestly, you can’t go wrong with Death of a Ghost.” —Boston Evening Transcript  Praise for Margery Allingham   “Margery Allingham stands out like a shining light.” —Agatha Christie   “The best of mystery writers.” —The New Yorker   “Allingham was a rare and precious talent.” —The Washington Post   “Don’t start reading these books unless you are confident that you can handle addiction.” —The Independent

Everyone's hiding something in Alder Vale. And some secrets are worth killing for . . .

Six years ago, a lavish party in the woods behind an English country estate ended in the death of Dominic Rayner—the golden boy heir to a powerful aristocratic family. It was ruled a tragic accident. But the guests who were there that night have never recovered, while the truth remained buried.

Now, Tatum—Dominic's beautiful, manipulative ex—is back in town with a young son and an agenda. She's blackmailing the family patriarch, running from her past, and threatening to upend everything the elite village of Alder Vale has worked so hard to keep quiet.

As whispers spread, old wounds reopen. A missing phone. A drunken confession. Another body . . .
And beneath the manicured lawns and polite smiles, something much darker is crawling to the surface. Because the truth isn't just ugly. It's lethal.

Perfect for fans of Harlan Coben and Lisa Jewell, Lie To Me is a chilling psychological thriller about buried secrets, fractured friendships, and what happens when the lies we live by are finally exposed.

The Absence of Mr Glass: "But What about the two voices?" asked Maggie, staring. - "Have you never heard a ventriloquist?" asked Father Brown. "Don't you know they speak first in their natural voice, and then answer themselves in just that shrill, squeaky, unnatural voice that you heard?" - There was a long silence, and Dr Hood regarded the little man who had spoken with a dark and attentive smile. "You are certainly a very ingenious person," he said; "it could not have been done better in a book. But there is just one part of Mr Glass you have not succeeded in explaining away, and that is his name. Miss MacNab distinctly heard him so addressed by Mr Todhunter."

When I agree to visit Grenville in his villa near Rome, I scarcely imagine that I immediately will become embroiled in mystery and mayhem. James Denis has requested that I purchase an antique from a collector, one Conte de Luca. Before I can approach this count, I am recruited by a Roman a man to help rescue his daughter from a cool aristocrat, and then asked to solve the murder of an Englishman—by a man who is already dead.
These tasks do not keep me from traveling to the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum and exploring to my heart’s content, but trouble follows me in the form of a man bent on killing me—for what reason I cannot fathom.
All this is compounded by another murder back in Rome, and I am commanded by James Denis, as well as the aristocrat who stole my new Roman friend’s daughter, to find out who committed the deed and the secret of the man’s astonishing collection of rare and fine art.
Probing these puzzles lead me to the past, present, and future troubles of the Italian peninsula, a beautiful but deadly place in the spring of 1820.

"The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton" is one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes and was published in 1904.
Holmes is hired by the débutante Lady Eva Blackwell to retrieve compromising letters from a blackmailer: Milverton, who causes Holmes more revulsion than any of the 50-odd murderers in his career. Milverton is "the king of blackmailers". He demands £7,000 (over £800,000 in 2015) for the letters, which if given to third parties would cause a scandal that would end Lady Eva's marriage engagement. Holmes offers £2,000, all Lady Eva can pay, but Milverton insists on £7,000. It is worth £7,000 to him, he explains, to make an example of Lady Eva; it is in his long-term interest to ensure that his future blackmail victims would be more "open to reason" and pay him what he wants, knowing he will destroy them if they do not. Holmes resolves to recover the letters by whatever means necessary, as Milverton has placed himself outside the bounds of morality.
