Summary

DIY Electronics Repair: A Practical Guide to Troubleshooting and Fixing Common Devices empowers readers to tackle everyday electronics issues, blending practical skills with a sustainability ethos. Centered on reducing e-waste and reclaiming control over gadgets, the book transforms intimidating repairs into approachable projects. It demystifies core concepts like voltage and circuitry, then guides readers through troubleshooting smartphones, laptops, and appliances—emphasizing how basic tools and systematic problem-solving can revive devices instead of discarding them. By linking repair literacy to environmental impact, it reveals how fixing a single laptop can save 1,200 gallons of water, framing DIY repairs as both cost-saving and ecologically vital.

The book stands out by balancing technical depth with accessibility, avoiding rote instructions to instead explain the “why” behind each step. Chapters progress from circuit diagrams and safety protocols to hands-on fixes like battery replacements or screen repairs, enriched with visual guides and real-world case studies. Unique insights—such as decoding lithium-ion battery chemistry or using 3D-printed parts to bypass proprietary barriers—equip readers to adapt solutions beyond the manual. It critiques manufacturer practices that hinder repairs while aligning with the global “Right to Repair” movement, merging activism with practicality.

Written in clear, mentor-like prose, the guide transforms novices into informed custodians of their devices. Its project-based approach, rooted in crafts and hobbies, bridges technical accuracy with everyday relevance. Whether reviving water-damaged phones or repurposing old gadgets, the book redefines electronics as tools for sustainability, proving that a soldered joint can be a small act of defiance against disposable culture.

With evocative storytelling and incisive research, Katie Rose Guest Pryal brings a new eye to the mental health crisis that higher education has faced for decades. Written from the perspective of a bipolar-autistic professor, A Light in the Tower is both a bracing account of the mental health crisis in higher education and a passionate and informed proposal for how to teach with mental health in mind.

Pryal contends that higher education's mental health crisis is the result of long-term systemic problems in education that demand nothing short of a revolution. She examines the anxiety that plagues campuses as a result of exploited and overworked contingent faculty and students, the shock events like COVID-19 and campus shootings that traumatize communities, the systemic and institutional burnout that affects higher education at every level, and the market-driven culture of toxic overwork. These are large-scale problems that need large-scale solutions. Addressing the stigma that haunts mental disability on campus, the ableism that hounds our teaching, and the cascade of mental health struggles that far too many faculty and students face, Pryal provides straightforward solutions to these complex challenges.

From about 12,900 to 11,700 before present (BP), near Ice Age conditions returned to the Northern Hemisphere of the planet. It was a sudden shift from the warm temperatures that had prevailed for nearly 2,000 years. This period is referred to by archaeologists, geologists, and earth scientists as the Greenland Stadial, but it is more commonly known as the Younger Dryas. The Younger Dryas marked the end of the last glacial period, the end of the Pleistocene Era, and the beginning of the Holocene Era, which is the current era. It was a period of great change, when climate change happened quite quickly, directly affecting the flora, fauna, and humans of the Northern Hemisphere in the process. The impact on the human populations was perhaps most important because, in some places, it virtually destroyed emerging cultures, while in other places, it might have propelled humans to develop new survival traits and technologies later used to move humanity into the Neolithic era. Although scholars now know quite a bit about the Younger Dryas, many elements of it are still debated. Other aspects serve as a predictor of what humans can expect in the future.
There is, however, still plenty of information about the Younger Dryas that remains unknown or open to debate. Not all scholars agree on the dates of the Younger Dryas or how long it lasted. Even more controversial are the alternate theories about what caused the Younger Dryas and the effect it had on the Northern Hemisphere’s bio-populations. This book examines the background of the Younger Dryas, its effects on bio-populations, and how it contributed to the emergence of the Neolithic Era. Alternative theories will be examined and compared to more standard ideas currently prevailing in academia.
