Beschreibung

The Italian physicist Ettore Majorana mysteriously disappeared in 1938. Majorana was part of the famous Via Panisperna group directed by Enrico Fermi. In those years the model of «heavy atom» (that is, with many electrons) was proposed, and Fermi elaborated a model based on Statistical Quantum Mechanics known as the Thomas-Fermi model (as established in the same period by Llewellyn Thomas). This model was governed by a nonlinear second-order differential equation. Numerical integration was extremely complicated. Fermi and his group had been working on it for a week. Ettore Majorana only needed one night's work not only to integrate the equation, but to develop a sophisticated algorithm for the solution of an entire class of differential equations. In the ebook that we offer today we present our solution obtained with the aid of the Mathematica software.

Marcello Colozzo, a graduate in Physics, has been involved in online teaching of Mathematics and Physics since 2008 through the Extra Byte website where "simulations" are performed in the Mathematica computing environment. In recent years he has published various articles on mathematical physics and collaborates with the Electronic Open Source magazine. An avid reader of cyberpunk fiction, he has attempted to transition into "cyber writer" status by publishing various anthologies of short stories.

    Face size matters!
90% of the population reaches adulthood with underdeveloped midfaces and lower jaws. This causes lots of crowding—the teeth, tongue, tonsils, and adenoids are crowded. The nasal septum deviates to one side or the other, ears get congested. The airway is restricted, and the body responds by shifting into the Sympathetic Nervous System. Living in low-level sympathetic mode erodes health. This can contribute to anxiety, headaches, low thyroid, ADHD/ADD symptoms, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and many other common mental or physical health conditions.
Dr. Pomerance was part of that 90%. In About Face, she shares her Airway Dentistry expertise regarding face size and health outcomes stemming from years of continuing education, her personal health struggles, and decades of clinical experience, explaining:How facial underdevelopment happensWhat to do to avoid itHow to identify itHow to resolve the underdevelopment to restore health and wellbeing
Whether you're a dental professional or simply want to learn more about the subject to improve your quality of life, About Face provides a wealth of information and resources in an accessible, comprehensive format.

Are humans the only dreamers on Earth? What goes on in the minds of animals when they sleep? When Animals Dream brings together behavioral and neuroscientific research on animal sleep with philosophical theories of dreaming. It shows that dreams provide an invaluable window into the cognitive and emotional lives of nonhuman animals, giving us access to a seemingly inaccessible realm of animal experience.

David Peña-Guzmán uncovers evidence of animal dreaming throughout the scientific literature, suggesting that many animals run "reality simulations" while asleep, with a dream-ego moving through a dynamic and coherent dreamscape. He builds a convincing case for animals as conscious beings and examines the thorny scientific, philosophical, and ethical questions it raises. Once we accept that animals dream, we incur a host of moral obligations and have no choice but to rethink our views about who animals are and the interior lives they lead.

A mesmerizing journey into the otherworldly domain of nonhuman consciousness, When Animals Dream carries profound implications for contemporary debates about animal cognition, animal ethics, and animal rights, challenging us to regard animals as beings who matter, and for whom things matter.

A plan formed in my mind. I would explore the places in this land that hid my grail. I would spend a whole year or longer, if that's what it took, wading through marshes, hiding between mossy rocks, paddling down rivers, and swimming in sea lochs; recording my journey through the seasons as I searched for wild otters.

Mysterious, graceful, and ever-clever, otters have captivated our imaginations, despite the fact that few people have encountered one in the wild. In Otter Country, celebrated nature writer Miriam Darlington captures the fascination she's had for these playful animals since childhood, and chronicles her immersive journey into their watery world.

Over the course of a single year, Darlington takes listeners on a winding expedition in pursuit of these elusive creatures—from her home in Devon, England, and through the wilds of Scotland, Wales, the Lake District, and the countryside of Cornwall. As she's drawn deeper into wilder habitats, trekking through changing landscapes, seasons, and weather, Darlington meets biologists, conservationists, fishing and hunting enthusiasts, and poets—enriching her understanding, admiration, and awe of the wild otter. With each encounter, she reveals the scientific, environmental, and cultural importance of this creature and the places it calls home.
