Summary

Eight essays on literature, language, art, Europe and life from one of Germany's most revered living writers.

After a visit to Putin's old postbox, the reader is taken to Dresden and Brixton, Gdańsk and Minsk, diverted to birds, bees, stray cats and pet dogs, confronted with Stasi and KGB, Proust and Jah Shaka, puzzled by overcoats and anoraks, Francis Bacon and Vermeer, and lost (then found) in service stations and memorial centres. Throughout, Marcel Beyer forges unexpected links and makes unpredictable leaps.

"I work from the margins, partly very literally as I build my sentences, for instance when I start with the name of a colour rather than a noun, to explore how the sentence might be steered from there to a subject. In my reading, I am drawn to the outliers or, as malicious claims would have it, to the obscure. Central books: that is, those everyone can agree on, have never much interested me. I am rarely tempted to explore the centre of my world in writing, and even if I did want to encroach upon a centre, I would have to choose a path from the outside. But outside, too, one advances to the heart of things."

Inspired by the great W. G. Sebald, Beyer's playful literary investigations wend through the high points and horrors of Europe's artistic history, towards a profoundly personal conclusion.

JT Corwin has it all: the name, the wealth, the privilege of being one of the most eligible bachelors in New England. He has everything except what he craves most…love. Between his missing father, abrasive mother, and a slew of meaningless relationships, JT is tired of being an empty shell. So when he meets a stranger who seems to know exactly what he needs, JT has a hard time getting her out of his mind, despite the trouble she promises to bring.
Estes MacAnndra knew this might be the last year she could run her scam. Her partner in crime has plans for expansion while Estes just wants to move on to an honest and simple life. Running around from state to state, avoiding the law, and hiding her truth has taken its toll. Salem was just one stop, a place to tap into the history and give the people what they craved during the haunted season. But this Salem has a certain handsome shifter who is drowning in loneliness and yearning for peace. A man who has given her something no one else could…hope.
Estes has a dangerous secret. JT is in charge of a dangerous town with a dark history of prosecuting those who are different. JT suddenly finds himself on the wrong side of the law with no one to turn to. Estes may use her ancestry to make a living, but now she needs to tap into a power she's always had to hide, in order to help JT. It may
expose her to those of her kind who want to remain unknown, but for the first time in her life she can do something good with her talents. However, in Salem, no good deed goes unpunished. And when JT loses control of his town, he discovers he may not be able to save himself and the woman who has claimed his broken heart.

The Detective has been a mainstay of fiction writing ever since we can remember.
Their deductive powers, their intuition and fleet-footed grasp of every detail can often turn the unlikeliest situation, or bunch of red herrings, into a breakthrough to capture even the most ingenious and dastardly of criminals.
In this series our classic authors explore not only various themes, such as Occult Detectives, Female Detectives, Curious Crimes and a whole host more, but also bring a range and depth to the whole culture of criminality as we send in the Long Arm of the Law to bring justice on behalf of the society it serves.
In this volume Police Investigation is put under the microscope and some revealing methods explained.

Concerned that we hadn’t heard from her in over a year, Fish had dragged me all the way into the middle of Russia to follow up a lead on the whereabouts of our telepathic team member. Amanda, aka Bee. But what was supposed to be a simple reconnaissance mission — gathering intel so we could formulate a plan that might need to involve the rest of the team — went sideways within twenty-four hours.
Because even though the bonds that held we Five together in life were tied so tight that the death of one of us might mean the death of all … I was apparently the only one who took the responsibility that came with those ties seriously.
