Summary

Against the turbulent backdrop of the 1930s, Douglas Tulloch navigates the treacherous terrains of India's Northwest Frontier and the early tremors of World War II in France. Thrust in the middle of tribal rebellions, covert missions and old-school rivalries, Tulloch grapples with the true essence of leadership. The repercussions of his decisions will follow him from the alleys of Brussels to the shores of Dunkirk.

Tulloch’s mettle is put to the test, as confrontations with Italian spies, confrontations with old adversaries and the moral intricacies of warfare push him to the brink. Sometimes, the line between right and wrong isn't as clear as the "Thin Red Line" he admired as a boy.

The first novel in Malcolm Archibald's 'Tulloch at War' series, NOW I AM A SOLDIER is an intimate portrait of a soldier's journey, from cadet to battle-hardened officer.
Available since: 09/20/2023.
Print length: 328 pages.

This novel reflects on the rumours and theories surrounding a number of real-life events, including the death of the Duke of Kent and the aircraft crashes of Short Sunderland W4032 and Avro Anson DJ106.
Wing Commander Robert Sutherland has left his days as a pre-war detective far behind him. Or so he thinks. On 25 August 1942 the Duke of Kent, brother of King George VI, is killed in northern Scotland in an unexplained air crash; a second crash soon after suggests a shared, possibly sinister, cause. Bob Sutherland is tasked with visiting the aircraft's base in Oban and the first crash site in Caithness to gather clues as to who might have had reason to sabotage one, or both, of the aircraft.
Set against the background of a country that is far from united behind Winston Churchill, and the ever-present threat from the enemy, we follow Bob as he unravels layers of deceit and intrigue far beyond anything he expects.

Will their dreams fall apart when confronted with all that is stacked against them?

Delphinium Nielsen and her sisters have accomplished much in the past year, traveling west and settling in Nebraska. They are on their way to building a garden in dedication to their mother and working against the forces of nature to make their farm thrive. However, none of that can mask their concern that they are quickly running out of money. Del's work teaching in their booming town offers hope, not only to support her sisters financially, but also to better her students' lives. Not all of the town sees it that way, though, with the rebuilding of the schoolhouse continually neglected and her brightest student's father demanding he work the farm instead of attend class.

When their brother Anders arrives with his war-wounded and heartbroken friend RJ, Anders sees the strength of the sisters' idea to start a boardinghouse and decides to invest in it. Del finds RJ barely polite and wants nothing to do with him. But despite Del and her sisters' best-laid plans, the future--and RJ--might surprise them all.

"Snelling's thorough research pays off in her vivid evocation of frontier-era Nebraska . . . The result is a transportive historical worth getting lost in."--Publishers Weekly

The papers call me “the gentleman killer.” I wrapped the throat of my first victim in the silk scarf with which I strangled her. That's what passes as a gentleman these days.I ask you: How do you reconcile a man who is capable of deep, tender love (because I've felt it), a man, who—by public standards—is a health reformer, assistant to the future British Prime Minister ,and the son-in-law of a wealthy industrialist, but who, when the moment overtakes him, kills women? I don't know what to make of it myself, but that's me. I've been told I have a philosopher's mind, that I'm ambitious and can do anything I set my mind to—but sometimes my sadomasochistic tendencies get the better of me.I don't venture judgement—on myself or anyone else. I'll leave that up to you.My name is Kilcairn, and these are my confessions.

Amityville baywoman Ellie West fishes by day and bootlegs moonshine by night. It's dangerous work under Prohibition — independent operators like her are despised by federal agents and mobsters alike — but Ellie's brother was accepted to college, and Ellie's desperate to see him go. So desperate that when wealthy strangers ask her to procure libations for an extravagant party, Ellie sells them everything she has, including some booze she acquired under unusual circumstances. What Ellie doesn't know is that this booze is special. Distilled from foul mushrooms by a cult of diabolists, those who drink it see terrible things — like the destruction of Long Island in fire and flood. The cult is masquerading as a church promising salvation through temperance and a return to "the good old days", so it's hard for Ellie to take a stand against them, especially when her father joins. But Ellie loves Long Island, and she loves her family, and she'll do whatever it takes to ensure neither is torn apart.
