Summary

In "The Story of Joan of Arc the Witch-Saint," M. M. Mangasarian presents a compelling narrative that intertwines historical facts with literary embellishments to explore the life of Joan of Arc. Utilizing a distinctive style that blends biographical detail with philosophical inquiry, Mangasarian delves into the societal perceptions of female strength and piety in the 15th century. This work not only recounts Joan's military exploits and martyrdom but also scrutinizes the complexities surrounding her legacy as both a saint and a figure of controversy. Through rich prose, the author contextualizes Joan's trials in an era rife with superstition and religious fervor, invoking an engaging dialogue on the nature of faith and the occult. M. M. Mangasarian was a notable Armenian-American writer and philosopher who straddled religious and secular thought. His background, deeply influenced by the intersections of faith, reason, and the burgeoning secular movements of his time, significantly colors his portrayal of Joan of Arc. His interest in deconstructing myths and examining the nuances of historical figures is evident throughout this work, suggesting a profound engagement with the paradox of Joan's sanctity and supposed witchcraft. Readers seeking an intellectually rigorous yet accessible exploration of Joan of Arc's life will find Mangasarian's work both enlightening and thought-provoking. This book appeals to historians, literary enthusiasts, and anyone intrigued by the complex interplay between gender, faith, and historical narrative. Mangasarian invites readers to reconsider preconceived notions of heroism and villainy through the lens of one of history's most enigmatic figures.

"Dickens is the highest poetic expression of the English tradition between the heroic century of Napoleon, the glorious past, and imperialism, the dream of his future. (….) Only when one hates the hypocritical narrow-mindedness of Victorian culture from the bottom of one's soul can one appreciates with full admiration the genius of a man who compelled us to find this disgusting world of sated sluggishness interesting and almost endearing, who redeemed life's most banal prose into poetry." A biographical masterpiece: The biography of Charles Dickens in the famous, lively, novelistic style of Stefan Zweig.

This program is read by the author. The compelling, edgy, compassionate, laugh-out-loud memoir from Kari Ferrell, formerly known as the "Hipster Grifter"Before Anna Delvey, before the Tinder Swindler, there was Kari Ferrell. Adopted at a young age by a Mormon family in Utah, Kari struggled with questions of self-worth and identity as one of the few Asian Americans in her insulated community, leading her to run with the “bad crowd” in an effort to fit in. Soon, stealing from superstores turned into picking up men (and picking their pockets), and before she knew it, Kari had graduated from petty theft to Utah’s most wanted list. Though Kari was able to escape the Southwest, she couldn’t outrun her new moniker: the Hipster Grifter. New York City’s indie sleaze scene had found its newest celebrity—just as Kari found herself in a heap of trouble. Jail time, riots, bad checks, and an explosion of internet infamy and fetishization put her name in the spotlight. Beyond the gossip and Gawker posts, there’s a side to Kari the media never saw—until now. By turns rollicking and irreverent, warm and compassionate, You’ll Never Believe Me tells Kari’s story for the first time. A heartfelt narrative of redemption and reconciliation as Kari eventually dedicates her life to activism, social justice, and setting the record straight, this memoir introduces a fresh, hilarious new voice to the literary stage and offers readers a nostalgic, uplifting, and at times unbelievable book that grapples with truth, why we lie, and what it means when our pasts don’t paint the whole picture.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

    Kenneth Grahame

Kenneth Grahame was born on 8th March 1859 in Edinburgh.
At age 5 his mother succumbed to puerperal fever. His father, who had a drinking problem, now sent his 4 children to live with their grandmother at her large house in Cookham, Berkshire. Here the children lived in large open grounds next to the river. These early experiences would in later years, be retold in his writing through a myriad of characters.
Grahame loved being a pupil at St Edward's School, Oxford and wanted to enroll at the university there but his guardian demurred on account of the cost.
Instead, a banking career was chosen for him, starting in 1879 at the Bank of England, where he rose steadily to the rank of its Secretary until retiring, with a pension, in 1908 due to ill health.
Alongside his commercial career Grahame had written and published various stories and essays in several periodicals. Some were anthologized as ‘Pagan Papers’ in 1893, and two years later ‘The Golden Age’ and later still ‘Dream Days’ and its masterpiece ‘The Reluctant Dragon’ became part of many home libraries. His ability to view life through the lens of a young and curious child was superb, enabling the reader to easily identify with the character.
Grahame married Elspeth Thomson in 1899 and they had one child; Alastair, born semi-blind and plagued by health problems. In a heart-rending tragedy he would later take his own life whilst attending Oxford University in 1920.
In 1908 Grahame reworked many of the bedtime stories he had fashioned for his son into the enduring favourite; ‘The Wind in the Willows’, describing the heart-warming adventures of Mr Toad and his friends.
Kenneth Grahame died in Pangbourne, Berkshire, on 6th July 1932.
