Sinopsis

Storm Prophets explores the historical intersection of weather and belief, revealing how ancient cultures interpreted atmospheric phenomena as divine communication. The book argues that these interpretations profoundly influenced religious practices, social structures, and early scientific inquiry.

Intriguingly, the roar of thunder was once perceived as the voice of a god, and those who could seemingly predict or influence weather events often gained significant social and political power.

Beginning with ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, the book examines the origins of weather oracles and rainmaking rituals. It progresses through the classical world, analyzing weather divination in Greece and Rome, before broadening its scope to include non-European traditions, such as indigenous North American rain dances.

The book uniquely compares weather-related beliefs across diverse cultures, highlighting commonalities and differences in human responses to the natural world.

Understanding these historical perspectives offers valuable insights into the cultural impact of climate change and the enduring power of human belief systems.

This is a combo book with three different topics, all related to the beliefs, history, and culture of Mexico. The topics are the following:
1: Emiliano Zapata Salazar was a revolutionary in Mexico. He was a key figure in the Mexican Revolt of the years 1910 until 1920, and also the primary leader of the people's revolution in the Mexican state of Morelos and the creator of the Zapatismo agrarian movement.
2: Quetzalcoatl is an Aztec divine being whose name originates from the Nahuatl language and meaning "valuable snake" or "Quetzal-feathered Snake." "Quetzalcoatl, in its actual sense, means 'snake of valuable plumes,' but in the allegorical sense, 'best of men,'" said Ixtlilxóchitl, a descendant of Aztec royalty and history expert of the Nahua people, in the 17th century.
3: The cult image, female divine being, and folk saint Nuestra Seora de la Santa Muerte (Spanish meaning: Our Woman of the Holy Death) is a cult image, female divine being, and folk saint in Mexican Neopaganism and folk Catholicism. Her worshippers relate her with healing, security, and safe delivery to the afterlife simply because she's a personification of death. In spite of condemnation from Catholic Church leaders and, more just recently, evangelical movements, her following has grown substantially since the start of the twenty-first century.

How School Makes Kids Stupid -...

Education is supposed to be the foundation of knowledge, personal growth, and future success. However, the modern school system has become a rigid, outdated structure that often fails to serve its true purpose. Instead of fostering curiosity, creativity, and independent thinking, it enforces memorization, conformity, and a narrow definition of intelligence. The system was designed for an industrial era that no longer exists, yet it continues to shape young minds in ways that leave them unprepared for the real world.
The purpose of education has shifted drastically over time. Originally, learning was a means of survival and personal development, allowing individuals to acquire skills and knowledge relevant to their environment. With the rise of industrialization, schools were structured to produce disciplined, obedient workers rather than innovative thinkers. Today, that outdated model remains largely intact. Instead of adapting to the needs of a rapidly changing world, schools continue to prioritize standardization over flexibility, forcing students into a one-size-fits-all system that often stifles their potential.
At the core of this broken system is an overemphasis on memorization rather than true understanding. Students are expected to absorb and regurgitate information for tests, only to forget most of it shortly after. Critical thinking and problem-solving take a backseat to rote learning, leaving students ill-equipped to navigate complex real-world challenges. The grading system further reinforces this problem, reducing learning to a numbers game where students are judged by their ability to recall facts rather than their capacity for deep thinking.

When running as the third-party Progressive (Bull Moose) candidate for president of the United States in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt recorded a number of campaign speeches. Represented here are all of the cylinder recordings he made for the Edison Company in August of 1912, including "The Progressive Covenant with the People," "The Right of the People to Rule," "The Farmer and the Businessman," and "Social and Industrial Justice."

Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (October 27, 1858 - January 6, 1919) was an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president under President William McKinley from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900. Assuming the presidency after McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt emerged as a leader of the Republican Party and became a driving force for anti-trust and Progressive policies.
