Synopsis

Part-time Writer guides the reader through all aspects of writing – from the embryonic stages of researching and planning, to the hard slog of the writing and editing, through to the presentation of the manuscript, and finally, approaching agents and publishers. At each stage, the author explains how she did it – and how the reader can do it too. * How can I write engaging dialogue? * What can I do to make my characters 'live' on the page? * Must I always 'show and not tell'? * How can I transform a hobby into a book? * When is the right time to show my work to others? * How should I present my manuscript? * Do I need an agent? * Should I self-publish? * Where can I find the time to write a novel? In her inimitable style, Marjorie Quarton merges literary memoir, anecdotes and straight talking to provide invaluable insights into the realities of being a writer, while offering indispensable advice on the trade, making this book a must-have for any aspiring author.

How do we define patriotism in a diverse society? What divides us and what brings us together? Why do we feel uncomfortable celebrating our country’s history?
How to be a Patriot offers a new way of understanding our collective identity in a country wracked by division and brimming with markers of selfhood – faith, race, gender, age, sexuality.
Sunder Katwala himself grew up with some questions to work through. As a half-Indian, Irish Catholic child of the NHS, the chequered history of post-imperial Britain seemed very personal to him, but he realised that with that background he could hardly be anything but British, and proud of it too.
His timely and clear-eyed analysis seeks to navigate the many crises of this increasingly disunited kingdom: extremism and integration after 7/7; fear of immigration and the deep divides of Brexit; the resurgence of online racism; and the debate over our cultural heritage. Equipped with a nuanced understanding of the subject and a wealth of supporting data, he sets out to foster a more open and tolerant society: one that welcomes alternative ideas and cultures rather than shutting them out.
Ultimately, How to be a Patriot is a rousing story of lives lived together and shared values. Far from being divisive, it concludes, an inclusive and confident patriotism is a reminder that our differences need not define us.
Sunder Katwala's How to be a Patriot is a top non-fiction book that offers a unique perspective on nationalism and policy. It's a public commentary on the social science of our time, exploring discrimination and ideologies.

Populism, as a political ideology and movement, is rooted in the idea of a fundamental divide between "the people" and "the elite." It asserts that the common people, often portrayed as hardworking and morally upright, are being oppressed or ignored by an elite class of politicians, businessmen, and intellectuals who are perceived as self-serving and out of touch with the needs of the general public. The term "populism" has evolved over time and can be used to describe a range of political movements and leaders who claim to represent the interests of the ordinary person against established powers. However, despite its widespread usage, the definition of populism remains fluid, often shaped by the context in which it is used.
Historically, populism has roots in 19th-century agrarian movements in the United States and Europe. In the United States, for instance, the Populist Party emerged in the late 1800s as a response to the economic struggles of farmers, advocating for policies such as free silver and the direct election of senators. Similarly, in Europe, populist movements often arose in opposition to industrialization and the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the elites. These early forms of populism focused on economic issues and the struggle of the working class and rural populations against the powerful urban elites and industrialists.
In modern times, populism has become more varied and globalized, often adapting to the specific cultural, economic, and political climates of different countries. Contemporary populist movements often capitalize on discontent with globalization, rising inequality, and the perceived failures of traditional political elites to address the concerns of ordinary citizens. The populist playbook has expanded to include a wide array of strategies, from fiery rhetoric and social media manipulation to direct attacks on democratic institutions and the media.

Chinook Crew 'Chick' - Highs and...

Liz McConaghy spent a total of seventeen years flying with the RAF’s Chinook Fleet. Aged just 21, she was the youngest aircrew member to deploy to Iraq and was also the only woman on the Chinook wing for four years. In her astounding career, Liz McConaghy completed two deployments to Iraq followed by ten deployments to Helmand province in Afghanistan in support of the enduring Operation Herrick campaign.

Liz’s inspiringly honest story reveals the highs and lows that she witnessed at war, and the cost that came with that both, physically and mentally for those involved. During her deployments, she survived not only a near fatal wire strike onboard her CH47, but numerous enemy fire ‘contacts’ defending her crew by returning fire from both the M134 ‘Minigun’ and M60 weapons entrusted to her to operate.

Her biggest honor of all her duties, however, was serving on the Medical Emergency Response Team, or MERT, flying ambulance as it was more commonly known. This involved recovering wounded soldiers from the battlefield, often under fire, and witnessing them both die and indeed come back to life at her feet in the cabin of her Chinook.

Liz saw Camp Bastion grow from a barbed wire fence surrounding an area of tents in the sand to the huge Operating Base it became. She was also on the last 1310 Flight deployment there as the British forces withdrew 10 years later handing it back to the Afghan National Army.

Very few Chinook crew members, if any, spanned the length of time deployed as Liz McConaghy did. This is a genuinely unique tale that only Liz could tell, which ends with her battling the memories that haunted her, long after she had left the battlefield. Her own war within took her to the point of suicide once she had left the service. Her survival from both the battles in foreign lands and in her own head led her to begin telling her story, in the hope she can help others win their wars.

A year later, on November 27, 1978, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by disgruntled former City Supervisor Dan White in the offices of San Francisco's City Hall.
