Summary

Ancient Scrolls explores the pivotal role of ancient manuscripts in shaping history, preserving cultural heritage, and influencing religious studies. It examines how these fragile texts act as conduits, connecting us to the intellectual and spiritual worlds of past civilizations. One intriguing aspect discussed is the meticulous creation of these scrolls, from papyrus production to the artistry of illuminated manuscripts, reflecting the dedication of ancient scribes and the patronage systems that supported their work. The book further elucidates the challenges of interpreting these texts, addressing issues like ambiguous translations and ethical considerations surrounding their display.

The book journeys through time, examining significant examples, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, which shed light on Judaism and early Christianity, and Egyptian papyri, revealing details of daily life and governance. It also studies medieval illuminated manuscripts, uncovering artistic and theological developments. By blending material analysis with intellectual history, Ancient Scrolls uniquely emphasizes not only what the scrolls say but also how they were made and how their meanings have evolved.

Structured in three parts, the book begins with the physical nature of scrolls, moves into specific cultural examples, and concludes with modern interpretation and preservation. This comprehensive approach makes the book a valuable resource for anyone interested in history, religion, or the preservation of cultural heritage, offering accessible insights into the ancient world.

The Holodomor, also known as the Terror-Famine (meaning 'to kill through starving' in Ukrainian) or The Great Famine, was a devastating man-made disaster that struck Soviet Ukraine between 1932 and 1933. It resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians, with the word "Holodomor" specifically highlighting the purposeful nature of the famine. The term reflects the severity of the event, suggesting not only a catastrophic food shortage but also a deliberate attempt to destroy the Ukrainian population through starvation. Various factors contributed to the famine's man-made characteristics, including the refusal of Soviet authorities to allow outside aid, the forced confiscation of family food supplies, and the imposition of severe restrictions on population movement.
The Holodomor was part of a larger Soviet famine that affected other grain-producing regions of the USSR in the same period, but Ukraine, as one of the Soviet Union's most important agricultural producers, bore the brunt of the crisis. The famine was not a result of natural disasters but of Stalinist policies, such as forced collectivization, that wreaked havoc on Ukraine's agricultural systems. The Ukrainian people, most of whom were ethnic Ukrainians, faced the unimaginable toll of starvation in what remains one of the most catastrophic peacetime events in Ukrainian history.
Ukraine, along with 15 other countries, officially recognized the Holodomor as a genocide perpetrated by the Soviet regime against the Ukrainian people, a stance that has been supported since 2006. The question of how many people perished remains a subject of debate. A joint declaration made to the United Nations in 2003 suggested that between 7 and 10 million Ukrainians died during the famine. However, current estimates by scholars tend to range from 3.5 to 5 million deaths.

The sixth man who walked on the moon shares his journey to the stars, into the mind, and beyond.
In February 1971, as Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell hurtled Earthward through space, he was engulfed by a profound sense of universal connectedness. He intuitively sensed that his presence and that of the planet in the window were all part of a deliberate, universal process, and that the glittering cosmos itself was, in some way, conscious. The experience was so overwhelming, Mitchell knew his life would never be the same.
For the next thirty-five years, he embarked on another journey, an inward exploration of the ineffable mystery of human consciousness and being. Mitchell left NASA to form the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). There he initiated research in areas of study previously neglected by mainstream science and constructed a theory that could explain not only the mysteries of consciousness, but also the psychic event—what spiritualists call a “miracle” and scientists dismiss altogether.
Mitchell also created a new dyadic model of reality, revealing a self-aware universe not predetermined by the laws of physics, preordained by deities, or infinitely malleable. While human actions are generally subject to the laws of physics, these laws are also influenced by the mind.
From Outer Space to Inner Space traces two remarkable journeys—one through space and one through the mind. Together they fundamentally alter the way we understand the miracle and mystery of being, and ultimately reveal humankind’s role in its own destiny.
Previously published as The Way of the Explorer, this edition includes a new foreword by Avi Loeb, an afterword by Dean Radin, and a postscript chapter by the author.

"Dear Tulsī, you are much beloved by Lord Kṛṣṇa because your leaves are always at His lotus feet. Dear mālatī flower, dear mallikā flower, dear jasmine flower, all of you must have been touched by Kṛṣṇa while He was passing this way after giving us transcendental enjoyment. Have you seen Mādhava passing this way? O mango trees, O trees of jackfruit, O pear trees and āsana trees! O blackberries and bael trees and trees of the kadamba flower—you are all very pious trees to be living on the bank of the Yamunā. Kṛṣṇa must have passed through this way. Will you kindly let us know which way He has gone?" The Srimad Bhagavatam

Tulsi Devi (Vrinda - Holy Basil) is a sacred plant in Hindu belief. She is regarded as an earthly manifestation of the goddess Srimati Tulsi Devi, and is as an avatar of Lakshmi, and thus the consort of Vishnu. The offering of her leaves is mandatory in the worship of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. Tulsi is regarded as the holiest of all plants and a bridge between heaven and earth. A traditional prayer teaches the creator Brahma and the Ganges resides in her branches, all holy pilgrimage centers in her roots, all deities are in her stem and leaves, and the Vedas are found in the upper part of her branches. The Tulsi herb is a center of household devotion, and is often referred to as the "women's deity" and "a symbol of wifehood and motherhood." Vaishnavites consider it as the manifestation of god in the plant kingdom. Tulsi Devi is one of Krishna’s most intimate servants coming to bless us all with extraordinary fortune. She has delicate purple and green leaves, flower tassels (like miniature temple spires), and an arresting, sweet fragrance famous for attracting the minds of yogis to Krishna’s service via Bhakti Yoga. Tulasi’s wood is carved into the Japa beads on which devotees chant Krishna’s holy name.
