Summary

A powerful, provocative play about international relations and the shifting balance of power between East and West.
Tiananmen Square, 1989. As tanks roll through Beijing and soldiers hammer on his hotel door, Joe - a young American photojournalist - captures a piece of history.
New York, 2012. Joe is covering a presidential election, marred by debate over cheap labour and the outsourcing of American jobs to Chinese factories. When a cryptic message is left in a Beijing newspaper, Joe is driven to discover the truth behind the unknown hero he captured on film. Who was he? What happened to him? And could he still be alive?
A gripping political examination and an engaging personal drama, Chimerica examines the changing fortunes of two countries whose futures will shape the whole world.
Originally premiered to critical acclaim at the Almeida Theatre, London, in a co-production with award-winning touring company Headlong, this updated version of the play was published alongside Chimerica's transfer to London's West End.
'ambitious, sprawling, morally fascinating, as gripping as a good novel' The Times
'a tremendously bold piece of writing... topical without being gimmicky and well-informed without being showily so... a landmark production' Evening Standard
'a gripping, multilayered and meticulously researched thriller... like an expansive HBO mini-series expertly compacted into an evening at the theatre... Kirkwood's sharp, incisive dialogue is splendid' Time Out
Available since: 08/22/2013.
Print length: 136 pages.

Valued Friends is a comedy of manners about the property market which won both the Evening Standard and Critics' Circle Awards when it was first performed at Hampstead Theatre, London, in 1989.
Four people live together in a large old house in London. They include Sherry, a wacky girl trying to make it as a comedienne; Paul, a pop music journalist; Paul's girlfriend Marion; and Howard, who is writing a left wing analysis of the corruption of capitalism under the Thatcher government. They all are perfectly content living where they are; until, that is, a developer offers them a huge sum of money to vacate. Soon, their talk about music and idealism gives way to heated discussions about real estate, capital appreciation and negotiating tactics. They decide that they can force the developer to raise his offer by renovating the house; and three years of this leave them with a huge capital gain, and a deep spiritual loss.
'I had the great pleasure of working with Stephen Jeffreys on his play, The Libertine. Would that all playwrights had his openness, his talent, his hard-headedness, his experience, his enthusiasm, his complexity, and perhaps best of all his talent and interest in eliciting the best in others' - John Malkovich
'Stephen's plays always bear the kitemark of unique, handcrafted quality' - Ian Rickson

The church building has been pivotal to man’s spiritual and religious life for centuries.
For many the interior of a church is literally their one to one with God. The interiors, whether soaring or simple, ornate or minimal, are built for communion, for worship.
Outside and surrounding our many churches is the churchyard; the burial ground, the repository for faithful souls. An all-weather idyll of calm around where many a poet has sat and contemplated the surrounding world.
The stone may be old, weathered and worn. The trees and grass overgrown and wind-blown but this is a sanctuary, a shelter from frenetic life. Moments here in reflective solitude make thought redemptive. This is unquestioning ground that makes no demands on those who seek to stop and wonder.
Within this volume of glorious verse questions are asked, decisions are made. And whether of Faith or not this oasis of calm brings solitude, renewal and an awareness that Life can produce answers to the most pressing of problems.
