  Darius I, more commonly known as Darius the Great, reigned as the third King of Kings of the Achaemenid Empire from 522 BCE until his death in 486 BCE. Under his rule, the empire reached its zenith, encompassing vast territories across Western Asia, parts of the Balkans (including Thrace, Macedonia, and Paeonia), the Caucasus, the Black Sea's coastal regions, Central Asia, the Indus Valley in the east, and portions of North and Northeast Africa, such as Egypt (Mudrâya), eastern Libya, and coastal Sudan. His reign marked a critical period of expansion and consolidation for the Persian Empire. 
  Darius ascended to power through a complex and controversial process. He orchestrated the assassination of Bardiya, the rightful heir to the throne, whom he claimed to be an impostor named Gaumata. Once in power, Darius turned his attention to strengthening and expanding the empire. One of the defining episodes of his reign was his campaign against Greece. This effort aimed to punish Athens and Eretria for their involvement in the Ionian Revolt. Although his forces suffered a significant defeat at the Battle of Marathon, Darius achieved notable victories elsewhere. He successfully reasserted Persian control over Thrace, annexed Macedon, and subjugated the Cyclades and the island of Naxos. His campaign also saw the destruction of Eretria, a Greek city.

  The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an American children's novel written by author L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. The first novel in the Oz books, the Kansas farm girl named Dorothy ends up in the magical Land of Oz after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their home by a tornado. Upon her arrival in Oz, she learns she cannot return home until she has destroyed the Wicked Witch of the West. The book was first published in the United States in May 1900 by the George M. Hill Company. In January 1901, the publishing company completed printing the first edition, a total of 10,000 copies, which quickly sold out. It had sold three million copies by the time it entered the public domain in 1956. It was often reprinted under the title The Wizard of Oz, which is the title of the successful 1902 Broadway musical adaptation as well as the classic 1939 live-action film. The ground-breaking success of both the original 1900 novel and the 1902 Broadway musical prompted Baum to write thirteen additional Oz books which serve as official sequels to the first story. Over a century later, the book is one of the best-known stories in American literature, and the Library of Congress has declared the work to be "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale."

  Cherokees of the Smoky Mountains...

  The text relates the powerful and dramatic history of Smoky Mountain Cherokees, who for 40,000 years thrived in the difficult terrain of the Great Smoky Mountains and its surrounding regions areas of what is now Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. With a constitution and organized government, a written language and no economic debt, the Cherokees sought to live in relative peace. However, President Jackson and the state of Georgia thought differently, forcing the Cherokees and their devoted Chief John Ross to leave their homeland and be removed to Oklahoma in the Trail of Tears (1837-1839). Much political tension was exacerbated by the fact that a key Supreme Court ruling by Chief Justice John Marshall made clear that Georgian land grabbing of Cherokee lands was illegal. This story, and how one Cherokee Chief was sacrificed to retain a small piece of Cherokee land in the southwest corner of North Carolina, known today as Qualla Boundary, is told with passion, empathy and historical accuracy. 
  Horace Kephart is also the author of Our Southern Highlanders, Camping and Woodcraft and Smoky Mountain Magic, and the creator of the Kephart knife. Mount Kephart, a 6,217 foot peak just northwest of Qualla Boundary, was chosen by Kephart and designated in his lifetime. He was instrumental in the founding of the Great Smoky National Park.  
  This version of Cherokees of the Smoky Mountains was revised by Kephart's great granddaughter, Janice Kephart, a spoken word artist, narrator, and US government subject matter expert, having served as a 9/11 Commission counsel. Janice added context for some commentary within the text but left the writing mostly as is, added historical photographs from the Hunter Library Horace Kephart Archive at Western Carolina University and other libraries, and added a new Foreword and Introduction.

  The Whigs and the Know Nothings...

  It was in the wake of the election of Andrew Jackson that the Whigs emerged as opponents to the Jacksonian Democrats during a period of American history known as the Second Party System (1828-1854). Initially, the conflict was rooted not only in different visions for the United States – the Whigs believed in a strong central bank and federally funded infrastructure projects (known as “internal improvements”) – but also in opposition to one man: Andrew Jackson. When it first formed, the Democratic Party coalesced around Jackson, and his beliefs and actions became Democratic Party dogma, which left the diverse group of people who opposed Jackson to become the Whigs.  
  The problem with this arrangement is that while the Whigs scored some notable successes as an opposition party, they found governing more difficult. The two Whigs elected president, William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor, died in office, raising to the presidency their respective vice-presidents, John Tyler and Millard Fillmore. Neither man succeeded in uniting the Whig Party behind him (a gargantuan task, to be sure), and neither was ever elected president in his own right. The increasing rancor over slavery is what finally killed the Whig Party.  
  	In the wake of contemporary debates over immigration, the “Know-Nothings” have been regularly cited as an example of how dangerous nativist attitudes can become and, indeed, have proven to be in America’s history. Several columnists, for instance, have striven to make comparisons between the Know-Nothings of antebellum America and the country’s recent immigration policies, helping in part to generate modern interest in a political party that many Americans have heard of but tend to know little about. The Know-Nothing movement can actually be tied to a number of violent episodes and ethnically charged riots that occurred during the late 1850s.
