Summary

Mesa Threads Spin explores the evolution of Navajo weaving, an art form deeply intertwined with cultural preservation, economic necessity, and artistic innovation. The book examines how this centuries-old tradition adapted to the demands of the tourist trade, highlighting the ingenuity of Navajo weavers. Readers will discover how the introduction of sheep and wool by the Spanish irrevocably shaped Navajo weaving traditions, and how weaving served as a cornerstone of Navajo society, linking spirituality, social structure, and economic survival.

The book progresses by first establishing the historical context of Navajo weaving before analyzing specific designs tailored for tourist consumption. It delves into the roles of trading posts and government policies in shaping the market. Ultimately, this study illustrates how Navajo weaving, often seen as commercialized, truly represents a resourceful adaptation that preserves cultural identity while navigating economic challenges.

The final sections cover contemporary issues like copyright and fair trade, offering a balanced perspective on cultural commodification.

    Kate is a student, hitching her way to Glastonbury in 1995. Julie is a newly separated housewife in her 40s, driving home. Against her better judgement, she picks Kate up and gets taken on a voyage of discovery that changes her life.
    Note: This consists of two stories, one from Julie's point of view and the other telling the same events from Kate's point of view and extending the story a bit.
    ~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
    …She took a sip of the wine. “What about you? Ever tried a walk on the wild side?”
    “What? Oh, you mean have I ever, um, been with a woman. No” Julie took another sip of the wine to hide her nervousness. I thought I’d got over this, why is it coming back?
    “Never? Not even at school? Never ‘practise’ kissing with your best friend? Never go to your best friend’s house and compare the changes puberty was making to you both? Never spent the night spooning with a friend at a sleepover? I did all of those and whereas I was gay I’m pretty sure they weren’t”
    Julie was sure her face was red as she answered. “No, I’ve never done anything like that” Though I do remember Cynthia at school talking about practising kissing with Emma. And I remember feeling jealous… She gulped some more wine to hide her discomfort. And why am I uncomfortable with this?
    “Well, if you want to see what you missed out on, I’m here.” Kate said with a smile and a seductive pout.
    Heart pounding, Julie replied “I thought you said I was safe with you”, smiling and laughing nervously. Did she mean that? Do I want her to have meant it?
    “I said that I wouldn’t do anything that you don’t want me to. And I meant it.” She reached over to put her wine glass down, moving closer as she did. “So, what do you want, Julie? Would you like me to kiss you?”
    Oh God… “I…” What do I say? “I…” Julie couldn’t speak, her voice was paralysed with the thought of where this might lead.
    Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, called “the most famous undocumented immigrant in America,” tackles one of the defining issues of our time in this explosive and deeply personal call to arms.
    “This is not a book about the politics of immigration. This book––at it's core––is not about immigration at all. This book is about homelessness, not in a traditional sense, but in the unsettled, unmoored psychological state that undocumented immigrants like myself find ourselves in. This book is about lying and being forced to lie to get by; about passing as an American and as a contributing citizen; about families, keeping them together, and having to make new ones when you can’t. This book is about constantly hiding from the government and, in the process, hiding from ourselves. This book is about what it means to not have a home.
    After 25 years of living illegally in a country that does not consider me one of its own, this book is the closest thing I have to freedom.”
    —Jose Antonio Vargas, from Dear America
    “One of the nation’s most prominent civil rights leaders” (Washington Post), a New York Times bestselling author, community organizer, investigative journalist, Ivy League professor, and former head of the NAACP, Ben Jealous draws from a life lived on America’s racial fault line to deliver a series of gripping and lively parables that call on each of us to reconcile, heal, and work fearlessly to make America one nation.
    Never Forget Our People Were Always Free illuminates for each of us how the path to healing America’s broken heart starts with each of us having the courage to heal our own.The son of parents who had to leave Maryland because their cross-racial marriage was illegal, Ben Jealous’ lively, courageous and empathetic storytelling calls on every American to look past deeply-cut divisions and recognize we are all in the same boat now. Along the way Jealous grapples with hidden American mysteries, including:Why do white men die from suicide more often than black men die from murder?How did racial profiling kill an American president?What happens when a Ku Klux Klansman wrestles with what Jesus actually said? How did Dave Chappelle know the DC Snipers were Black? Why shouldn't the civil rights movement give up on rednecks?When is what we have collectively forgotten about race more important than what we actually know?What do the most indecipherable things our elders say tell us about ourselves?
     Told as a series of parables, Never Forget Our People Were Always Free features intimate glimpses of political, and faith leaders as different as Jack Kemp, Stacey Abrams, and the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu and heroes as unlikely as a retired constable, a female pirate from Madagascar, a long lost Irishman, a death row inmate, and a man with a confederate flag over his heart.
    More than anything, Never Forget Our People Were Always Free offers readers hope America’s oldest wounds can heal and her oldest divisions be overcome.
