Sinossi

"Hide Stretching Craft" explores the crucial history of hide tanning and its vital role in family clothing production and self-sufficiency. More than just a manual, it examines how this craft shaped communities and passed down essential skills across generations. The book uniquely blends detailed technical instruction with in-depth historical and cultural analysis, demonstrating how the two are inextricably linked.

The book guides readers through the entire tanning process, starting with different types of hides and the necessary tools. It systematically explores various tanning methods, such as brain tanning and vegetable tanning, analyzing their chemical processes and the qualities each imparts to the finished leather. Later sections focus on crafting clothing from tanned hides, including patterns and sewing methods. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of traditional crafts and historical techniques, relevant for both history enthusiasts and those interested in homesteading.

"Hide Stretching Craft" argues that hide tanning was a cornerstone of family independence, connecting them to the natural world. By mastering this craft, families reduced their dependence on external markets fostering a deeper understanding of resource management. The book draws upon historical accounts, anthropological studies, and experimental archaeology, offering a rich perspective on how families created essential leather goods and family clothing.

    Darkest Christmas - December...

December 1942 saw the bloodiest Christmas in the history of mankind. Men were killing each other in greater numbers than ever before. The Holocaust continued, and innocent civilians were murdered by the thousands throughout the evil Nazi empire, even as the perpetrators celebrated the birth of Christ.

Millions stationed in far-off lands amid the greatest conflict in human history feared this was their last Christmas in freedom, or their last Christmas alive. At the same time as the slaughter continued unabated, throughout the world there were random acts of kindness. These gestures also straddled religious barriers and sometimes included those of non-Christian faiths.

At the same time, Christmas 1942 saw the injunction of "good will to man" distorted in ugly and callous ways. In Berlin, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels spent time with his family while still buried in feverish fantasies about the Jewish world conspiracy.

Christmas 1942 saw the entire range of man's conduct towards his fellow man, reflecting the extremes of behavior, good and bad, that World War II gave rise to. The way the holiday was marked around the world tells a deeper, more universal story of the human condition.

For more than fifty years, Robert G. McCloskey’s classic work on the Supreme Court’s role in constructing the US Constitution has introduced generations of students to the workings of our nation’s highest court.

As in prior editions, McCloskey’s original text remains unchanged. In his historical interpretation, he argues that the strength of the Court has always been its sensitivity to the changing political scene, as well as its reluctance to stray too far from the main currents of public sentiment. In this new edition, Sanford Levinson extends McCloskey’s magisterial treatment to address developments since the 2010 election, including the Supreme Court’s decisions regarding the Defense of Marriage Act, the Affordable Care Act, and gay marriage.

The best and most concise account of the Supreme Court and its place in American politics, McCloskey’s wonderfully readable book is an essential guide to the past, present, and future prospects of this institution.

    Women in Ancient Mesopotamia:...

Mesopotamia, the land between the rivers, occupied the floodplain of the Tigris and the Euphrates in what is now Iraq. It was not a single state or a single group, but a succession of them, spread across 3,000 years. The Sumerians built the first cities there in the 4th millennium B.C. at Uruk, Ur, and Lagash, and they invented writing, a wedge-shaped cuneiform script pressed into clay, around 3300 B.C. The Akkadians under Sargon built the first major empire in the 24th century B.C. The Babylonians under Hammurabi codified the most famous of ancient law collections in the 18th century B.C., and the Assyrians built a vast and brutal military empire in the north in the 1st millennium B.C. The Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians all had different civilizational characteristics, and the position of women in those societies was not the same among all of them, and those differences could be quite distinct.
What unites the whole, and what makes the history of women possible to study at all, is the clay. The Mesopotamians wrote on tablets of damp clay that hardened and survived, and they wrote in staggering quantity, not only through royal inscriptions and religious hymns, but also the ordinary paperwork of daily life, contracts, receipts, loans, marriage settlements, wills, court records, and private letters. Hundreds of thousands of these tablets survive, and a great many of them concern women, from the business letters of Assyrian merchant wives to the property contracts of Babylonian priestesses, the will of a Sumerian widow, the marriage law of Babylon, and the correspondence of a queen of Mari. The documentary record of Mesopotamian women is one of the richest the ancient world left, and it allows historians to see them not only as the idealized figures of art and myth but as litigants, lenders, weavers, and traders going about their lives.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Most people spend more time researching a car than they do examining the person they're about to build a life with. They confuse feeling good together with being right for each other. They avoid the hard questions because they don't want to ruin what they have. And then — a year in, five years in, after the wedding, after the children — the thing they were afraid to look at looks back at them.

Before Forever is about the five things that actually predict whether a relationship lasts: how someone handles money, conflict, family, truth, and pressure. Not chemistry. Not compatibility quizzes. The specific patterns that show up under weight — and how to see them clearly before you've committed a life.

Through real couples, beat-by-beat conversations, and research that reframes what you thought you knew about love, Talia Banks gives you the questions most people never ask — and shows you exactly what to do with the answers.

You don't have to get this wrong. You just have to look before you leap.
