Summary

Shang Dynasty explores the origins of Chinese civilization by examining the Shang Dynasty, a pivotal era that shaped East Asian history. Emerging around 1600 BCE in the Yellow River Valley, the Shang Dynasty laid the groundwork for China's enduring cultural and political identity. The book highlights how innovations in bronze technology, the development of a writing system evident in oracle bones, and intricate religious rituals like ancestor worship, were used to solidify power and create a cohesive social order.

The book delves into these three pillars of Shang civilization to reveal how they interconnected to establish a hierarchical society. It examines how the Shang Dynasty's innovations were strategic tools for maintaining control and legitimizing rule. The book progresses through an exploration of the Shang Dynasty's origins and social structure, before focusing on bronze technology, the writing system, and religious practices.

By analyzing archaeological evidence and primary sources, Shang Dynasty provides a nuanced understanding of this formative period. Its approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of Shang achievements, offering readers valuable insights into the long-term development of Chinese political and social thought.

The remarkable history of Britain and its animals, told through ten iconic species Have you ever wondered why we count sheep to get to sleep? Or where the phrase "red herring" comes from? Across British history, animals have been written about in poetry, painted in oils, and even recorded in law. Loved or feared, familiar or endangered, animals are everywhere to be seen. In this enchanting study, Karen R. Jones takes a journey through the history of ten animals to show the extraordinary story of "beastly" Britain. Jones looks at animals including foxes and hedgehogs, newts and beetles, ghostly hounds, and even the Loch Ness Monster. She reveals the place of animals in British cultural identity and sheds new light on the most iconic moments of British history, from the Black Death to World War II. The story of these isles may be told by human voices, but it is fully brought to life by listening to the squawks, bellows, and howls that make Britain what it is.

World War I was the first major conflict in which new electronic means of transmitting and receiving messages became a major factor in political and military operations. The electric telegraph was developed in the first half of the 19th century, and by 1850, there were several telegraph companies around the world providing a service that allowed virtually instantaneous communication over long distances. This was a major breakthrough, but the telegraph depended on the availability of wires to transmit messages between stations, meaning that if these wires were broken or damaged, communications were cut off.
Late in the 19th century, there was another new development, the telephone, though this too relied on wires to transmit and receive information. At the same time, there was a new invention that provided instant voice and Morse code communication over long distances that did not require wires. Initially called wireless, radio was quickly adopted by armies around the world as a way of providing rapid communication between military units. By the time World War I began in 1914, all the major nations involved had provided their forces with some form of radio equipment.
Of course, this came with a fundamental problem: radio, telephone, and telegraph messages could be intercepted by the enemy, potentially giving them notice of impending operations. To protect these electronic messages from being read by the enemy, armies began to use codes and ciphers to disguise the meaning of messages. Teams were created to devise effective codes and ciphers, and these were quickly followed by other teams whose role was to attempt to break the codes and ciphers used by the other side. As a result, a secret war began, almost completely hidden from public view, as the belligerents devised complex ways of hiding the real meaning of their own messages while simultaneously attempting to understand those of the enemy.

The purpose of my book is to share with you and the word the tragic events which I witnessed and lived through. My experience constitutes and an unusual testimony which should not be forgotten but studied by future generations, to learn the ultimate truth about Auschwitz. I write this book to tell about my experience and what I witnessed. However, I still remember vividly, the smoke coming from the chimneys of the crematoria, the stench of burning human bodies, the hard work in rain and snow, hunger and horrendous fatigue, diseases, lice, fleas, bugs and bloody dysentery. I am the Holocaust survivor who remembers vividly the horrors of Auschwitz and Dachau concentration camps.

A crisis of polarization more and more threatens the future of civilization. Whether it’s philosophy, theology, politics, or culture, we find ourselves falling into stark either/or dilemmas: Religion or science? Conservative or liberal? Faith or works? We can’t help but choose one idea at the expense of the other, falling into zero-sum games, mutual extremes, and the endless division of human life.   In The Way of Heaven and Earth, Matthew Becklo offers a way of interpreting this crisis: Christ and “the Catholic both/and.” Framing our greatest dilemmas as “heaven-earth dilemmas”—choices between God or man, God’s place or man’s place, the spiritual or the physical, or the spirit or the flesh—Becklo shows that our greatest hope for overcoming our divisions is in Christ, who is “the Way of heaven and earth,” and the Catholic Church, which is the fullness of the Way.   With the help of Scripture, Catholic teaching, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and various philosophers, theologians, and artists, The Way of Heaven and Earth finds new hope in this forgotten Way, which calls us into the paradoxes of the human journey.
