Summary

"Haitian Revolution" explores the groundbreaking slave rebellion in Saint-Domingue, which led to the establishment of Haiti and challenged colonial power structures globally. The book meticulously examines the political, social, and economic conditions that fueled this uprising. It argues that the Haitian Revolution was not merely a local revolt but a crucial event that forced a re-evaluation of racial and social hierarchies worldwide. The revolution's success demonstrated the potential for enslaved people to overthrow their oppressors, influencing subsequent liberation movements and contributing to the rise of abolitionist movements. The book chronicles the revolution's key stages, from initial uprisings to the declaration of independence in 1804, highlighting the roles of pivotal figures like Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines. By incorporating primary and secondary sources, including colonial records and eyewitness accounts, the book paints a vivid picture of the era. It analyzes the complex alliances and betrayals involving French, Spanish, and British forces, offering a fresh perspective on the agency of enslaved people and the revolution's global impact. The book connects the Haitian Revolution to various disciplines like postcolonial studies and African diaspora studies, showing its lasting impact on global thought. It also addresses ongoing controversies surrounding the revolution, such as the role of violence and the legacy of its leaders. This comprehensive analysis makes the book a valuable resource for understanding a pivotal moment in world history and its ongoing relevance to contemporary issues of social justice and equality.

THE INSIDE STORY OF THE MILIBAND AND CORBYN YEARS, AND HOW THEY LED TO THE LABOUR LEFT'S DEMISE For 42 years, Chris Williamson was a Labour Party member. In 2010, he was elected to Parliament to represent his home town. However, in 2019, he was unceremoniously suspended from the party after being subjected to a smear campaign, and he later resigned in protest at the betrayal. In this forensic memoir - free of his Labourist clutches - Williamson provides a unique ringside view. As well as lifting the lid on the amateurish politics-by-focus groups under Ed Miliband, Williamson exposes some of the major events that created and deepened Labour's 'antisemitism crisis' under Jeremy Corbyn. In his mission to set the record straight on numerous misreported events, Williamson names and shames the individuals - on the left and the right - whom he holds responsible for delivering his former party back into the hands of New Labourism under Sir Keir Starmer. To understand the existential crisis facing socialists in Britain today, Williamson's account of recent Labour history is indispensable."Williamson's analysis will be contentious and his trenchant views make uncomfortable reading. But for those who want to see a socialist future, or anyone who has ever voted Labour and wants to see it do better, this is essential reading." - Ken Loach, filmmaker"Chris Williamson is a compelling and committed socialist and was Jeremy Corbyn's most loyal supporter in Parliament: that is why he had to be sabotaged at all costs. … This book is a fascinating account of his struggle and the way forward." - Alexei Sayle, actor, author, stand-up comedian"Chris Williamson's 10 Years Hard Labour is an eye-opening, and at times, infuriating, insider's account of the coordinated political assault on the British Left that took place inside a party that was once its home." - Max Blumenthal, author, editor and founder of The Grayzone"The Left needs an honest account and reckoning of the rise and fall of 'Corbynism' - and I hope this book is start of that much needed self-criticism and honest debate." - Salma Yaqoob, peace activist"[Williamson] offers a searing indictment of the cannibalistic witch hunt that libelled Corbyn and others with false accusations of anti Semitism to cleanse the party of the Left. This is a necessary corrective history for British audiences and a warning for the Left in all Western democracies." - Rania Khalek, journalist, Breakthrough News

"On the Motion of Animals" is a scientific work by Aristotle that explores the principles of motion in living beings. In this treatise, Aristotle observes and analyzes the movements of various animals, from insects to humans, in order to understand the mechanics of motion and the physiological and psychological factors that drive it. Aristotle begins by examining the different types of motion, including natural, violent, and voluntary, and how they relate to the movements of animals. He then delves into the anatomy and physiology of different animals, looking at their skeletal structures, muscular systems, and nervous systems, and how they work together to produce motion. Read in English, unabridged.

  • Hans-Ulrich Rudel: The Life and Legacy of the Luftwaffe’s Deadliest Stuka Pilot - cover

Few people personified the advancements, abilities, and tactical adeptness of the Luftwaffe like Hans-Ulrich Rudel, the most successful dive bomber in the history of warfare. Like hundreds of millions of others born in the early 20th century, his life was shaped by the Second World War, which started when he was just 23. He was born into and shaped by one of the most brutal and infamous regimes in history, and once indoctrinated, he fought determinedly and with real commitment in support of that regime. He flew over 2,500 combat missions, reportedly destroying over 500 Soviet tanks, 170 artillery pieces, 800 other vehicles, and a battleship on the way to becoming the highest-decorated Nazi soldier of World War II, receiving the Knight’s Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. He was shot down, or crash landed, multiple times, and even after having reportedly been told by Hitler to stop flying on several occasions, he insisted on returning to the front to fight with his comrades. He lost a leg to gunfire in early 1945 but carried on with his combat missions despite the pain and the practical difficulties of flying with one leg. There is no denying his bravery, however unpleasant the cause for which he fought.
Hans-Ulrich Rudel is therefore a challenging character to analyze. His autobiography, Stuka Pilot, was originally entitled Trotzdem (“In spite of everything”), pointing strongly to his continuing support, post-war, for the Nazi ideology. But his book remains a detailed, fascinating, largely credible (and mostly ideology-free) account of his wartime experiences, even as his final pages include references to his proud insistence on performing the Nazi salute in front of the American soldiers who had taken him prisoner and who were providing medical care to his amputated stump.
