Sinopse

Etruscan Time unveils the mysteries of the Etruscan calendar, a sophisticated timekeeping system in pre-Roman Italy that significantly influenced the Roman calendar. The book explores how the Etruscans managed time through a lunar-solar calendar, integrating festival cycles and methods for tracking time's passage. It challenges the traditional view that Roman timekeeping was wholly original, demonstrating instead a cultural inheritance enriched over centuries. Intriguingly, the Etruscans, who flourished from roughly 900 to 27 BC, left a fragmented legacy that requires piecing together archaeological evidence and comparative analysis with other ancient calendars.

The book initially introduces the basic principles of ancient calendars and the challenges of reconciling lunar and solar cycles. Subsequent chapters delve into the structure of the Etruscan year, examining the names and sequence of months, the connection between the calendar and religious festivals, and the mechanisms of timekeeping. This approach reveals how specific dates held importance in Etruscan religious practices, offering insights into their cultural and intellectual landscape.

The book culminates in a detailed analysis of the Etruscan calendar's influence on the early Roman calendar, highlighting elements demonstrably adopted or adapted, thus underscoring the Etruscans' lasting impact on world history.

The Olmec people are widely recognized as the first major civilization of Mexico and are thus generally regarded as the mother civilization of Mesoamerica, making them the people from which all subsequent Mesoamerican cultures derived. In fact, the term Olmec is thought to have originated with the Aztec people, as Olmec in their Nahuatl language means “the rubber people”, a reference to the inhabitants of the land from which they accessed rubber. By and large, the Olmec culture is perhaps best identifiable by their so-called colossal heads, mammoth basalt head-statues wearing helmet-like headdresses found throughout Olmec habitation sites.
From the moment Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes first found and confronted them, the Aztecs have fascinated the world, and they continue to hold a unique place both culturally and in pop culture. Nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquered their mighty empire, the Aztecs are often remembered today for their major capital, Tenochtitlan, as well as being fierce conquerors of the Valley of Mexico who often engaged in human sacrifice rituals. Ironically, and unlike the Mayans, the Aztecs are not widely viewed or remembered with nuance, in part because their own leader burned extant Aztec writings and rewrote a mythologized history explaining his empire’s dominance less than a century before the Spanish arrived.
While scholars continue to debate whether the Toltec were an actual historical group, there is an added layer of mystery to the fact that the settlement at Tula has a lot in common with the famous Mayan settlement at Chichén Itzá. The architecture and art at both sites are so similar that archaeologists and anthropologists have assumed they had the same cultural influences, even as historians struggle to determine the historical timelines, and thus whether Tula influenced Chichén Itzá or vice versa.

The Classics Drama Company at DePaul is a new gathering of Thespians and Classicists dedicated to performing and understanding ancient literature. If you live in Chicago and attend DePaul University, we welcome new additions to our group. Contact Dr. Kirk Shellko (kshellko@depaul.edu), if interested. First performed in classical Athens c. 411 B.C.E., Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata” is the original battle of the sexes. One woman, Lysistrata, brings together the women of all Greece, exhorting them to withhold sexual contact from all men in order that they negotiate a treaty. Double entendres abound as men of Greece attempt to keep Lysistrata and her prurient gang from putting an end to the Peloponnesian war. Notably risqué, this comic drama sheds light on gender relations in ancient AthensLysistrata: Courtney NehlsCalonice: Natalie ChavezMyrrhine: Thu Hien PhamLampito: Nick MarottaStratyllis: Maggie HoganMagistrate: Ryan KeiferCinesias: Neil LoomisSpartan Herald: Maggie HoganEnvoys: Maggie Hogan, Neil LoomisAthenians: Courtney Nehls, Natalie Chavez, Thu Hien Pham, Nicholas Marotta, Maggie Hogan, Neil Loomis, Kirk ShellkoChorus of Women: Courtney Nehls, Natalie Chavez, Thu Hien Pham, Maggie Hogan, Neil LoomisMagistrate: Ryan KeiferSpartan Herald: Maggie HoganChorus of Old Men: Nicholas Marotta, Ryan Keifer, Neil Loomis, Kirk Shellko, Maggie HoganPorter, Market Idlers, etc: Nicholas Marotta, Maggie Hogan, Neil LoomisEditor: Kirk ShellkoTranslator is not named, but Jack Lindsay is commentator and Norman Lindsay is the illustrator.

"The Great Illusion" by Norman Angell is a thought-provoking analysis of international relations and the causes of war. First published in 1909, the book challenges the prevailing view of the time that war was a necessary and inevitable component of international politics.
Angell argues that the economic interdependence of nations in the modern world makes war irrational and self-defeating. He contends that war can no longer bring about the benefits it did in the past and that the cost of modern warfare would outweigh any potential gains. In this sense, he argues that the belief in the benefits of war is a "great illusion".
Angell's analysis is a precursor to the current debate on globalization and the interdependence of nations in the 21st century. He presents a powerful case for international cooperation, arguing that peace and prosperity can only be achieved through mutual understanding and collaboration among nations.
"The Great Illusion" is a seminal work in the field of international relations and a must-read for anyone interested in the causes of war and the prospects for peace in the modern world. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of diplomacy and cooperation in solving the complex problems of our time
