Summary

Abolition Movements offers a comprehensive exploration of the global struggle against slavery, highlighting its complex and multifaceted nature. Rather than a single event, abolitionism emerged as a tapestry of interconnected movements, each uniquely shaped by local contexts yet unified by the pursuit of freedom and social justice. The book argues that understanding the economic underpinnings of slavery, particularly its integration into global trade networks fueled by commodities, is crucial to grasping the institution's scale and tenacity. It further examines the diverse figures who championed abolitionism, from enslaved people resisting bondage to religious reformers and political leaders, showcasing the varied approaches employed, including moral persuasion, political lobbying, and slave revolts.

The book chronologically and thematically traces the history of abolitionism, starting with the historical context of slavery and moving through the rise of abolitionist movements in Europe and the Americas, including pivotal events like the Haitian Revolution and the American Civil War. Subsequent chapters explore the persistence of slavery in other regions and the ongoing fight against modern forms of human trafficking. Uniquely, this historical analysis provides a global perspective, moving beyond the traditional focus on the transatlantic slave trade to emphasize the agency of enslaved people in their liberation. Drawing on primary and secondary sources, Abolition Movements provides a rigorous analysis that connects to economics, sociology, and political science.

The book concludes by reflecting on the legacy of abolitionism and its relevance to contemporary struggles for social justice and human rights, making it an invaluable resource for understanding the long fight for freedom.

“What is comfort but a filament between past and present with some sort of future implied? In other words, safety. In other words, care. I know it is possible to find these things without her—I know they are there. But it can be so hard to ask. So much is unknown.” Rebecca Spiegel is working as a teacher in New Orleans when she learns of her sister’s suicide. Only after the funeral does shock give way to grief—and to many questions. How could Emily do this to herself? How could she have abandoned all those who loved her? And what could have been done differently to prevent this devastating loss? In the days and weeks that follow, Spiegel embarks on a search for answers. She unpacks family history, documents the last traces of her sister’s life, and questions what more she could have done to prevent her death. What she finds instead is that there is no narrative on the other side of grief like this. There is no answer, no easy resolution—only those that leave and those that keep living. Unflinchingly honest, visceral, and raw, this courageous elegy lays bare the hard realities of surviving the loss of a loved one.

    Modern Social Problems -...

Social problems are complex issues that affect individuals, communities, and societies on a broad scale. They arise when a significant number of people recognize a condition as harmful and in need of change. Social problems can range from economic inequality and racial discrimination to climate change and healthcare disparities. Understanding these issues from a sociological perspective allows for a deeper analysis of their causes, consequences, and potential solutions.
One of the key aspects of understanding social problems is recognizing that they are socially constructed. This means that what is considered a problem can vary across different societies, cultures, and historical periods. For example, while issues like poverty and crime are widely recognized as social problems, their definitions and solutions may differ depending on cultural norms, political ideologies, and economic conditions. Sociologists examine how these definitions change over time and how power dynamics influence which issues receive public attention and policy action.
Another crucial factor in understanding social problems is identifying their root causes. Many social problems are not isolated incidents but rather symptoms of deeper structural issues within society. Economic inequality, for instance, is often linked to factors such as wage disparities, lack of access to education, and systemic discrimination. Similarly, crime rates may be influenced by socioeconomic conditions, community resources, and the effectiveness of law enforcement policies. By looking beyond individual behaviors and examining broader social structures, sociologists aim to uncover the fundamental reasons why these problems persist.

Sam Houston and Santa Anna: The...

More than most men in history, Sam Houston was a contradictory individual. He was born in the United States while George Washington was in office, and in an era when the native people who were gradually being subjugated were considered savages, he called them friends and even lived among them. He was abandoned by his first wife and, after suffering the sting of divorce, married again in the manner of his native family, only to abandon his Indian bride to return to life among his own people. In the interim, he fought for their rights in the halls of government, defending them even as he obtained favor in the eyes of one of their worst enemies. He seemed to have the right mix of charm and grit to make a successful life with him and their large family.
Though he was born and raised elsewhere, Houston is considered one of Texas’ truest sons, and during his life he fought for its independence from Mexico and then for its submission to the United States. He owned slaves himself but spent his entire political career fighting against the spread of “the American cancer” to the West. Then, when his beloved state seceded from the Union, he not only opposed secession but sacrificed his own position to protest it, only to turn around and support the Confederacy during the last years of his life.
The butcher of the Alamo and Goliad. The traitor who sold half of Mexico. The Napoleon of the West. Mr. Fifteen Nails. The Mother Country’s seducer. Almost 150 years after his death, a lot of name-calling is still being directed towards Antonio López de Santa Anna, president of Mexico 11 times in the 19th century, and today, the vast majority of his compatriots consider him the greatest traitor in history. It was not like that in his day; actually, there had never been a more popular man in Mexico, or anyone more eulogized and essential than General Santa Anna. In life he was the most famous - and infamous - Mexican general and politician.
