Along with her sister Venus, she was coached by her parents. Serena has won 73 career singles titles, and is ranked 5th overall. She achieved a "Serena Slam" twice by winning all four major singles titles consecutively. She is also an Olympic gold medalist. CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Serena Williams was born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, and is the youngest of five daughters. Her parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams, coached her and her older sister Venus in tennis.

Serena turned professional in October 1995, and won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open. She became the second African-American woman to win a Grand Slam singles tournament, after Althea Gibson.

In 1997, as a relatively unknown player ranked No. 304, Serena defeated both No. 7 Mary Pierce and No. 4 Monica Seles at the Ameritech Cup Chicago. This made her the lowest-ranked player in the Open Era to defeat two top-10 opponents in one tournament.

Serena achieved her first "Serena Slam" by winning all four major singles titles from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open, each time defeating Venus in the final. This accomplishment secured both a career Grand Slam and a non-calendar year Grand Slam for her.

An intimate memoir and a recounting of the exciting coalescence of a vibrant and extraordinary community. Joe Wilcox documents from its beginnings, the formation of an unwitting community that demonstrates the enormous power of bringing together outsiders into a space of celebration—and in the process, explores the insights of creating deeply connected relationships that formed in the process. Wilcox fully examines the core idea of weaving connections in the structure of crafting communities.
Stumbling into becoming a knitter in his twenties and following his history of participating in various groups and communities is something that is surprisingly relatable for anyone that may have felt like an outsider or yearned to be part of a larger community of one’s own. The pursuit of joy and pride in accomplishment and in bringing together a magical community of like-minded outsiders makes for a fascinating journey. Joe Wilcox, is a lifelong knitter, who has blogged about where this journey has taken him for over two decades. He has also written the ultimate design for knitting together a most amazing community.

In this coming-of-middle-age memoir, Kim Heacox, writing in the tradition of Abbey, McPhee, and Thoreau, discovers an Alaska reborn from beneath a massive glacier, where flowers emerge from boulders, moose swim fjords, and bears cross crevasses with Homeric resolve. In such a place Heacox finds that people are reborn too, and their lives begin anew with incredible journeys, epiphanies, and successes. All in an America free of crass commercialism and overdevelopment.

Braided through the larger story are tales of gold prospectors and the cabin they built sixty years ago; John Muir and his intrepid terrier, Stickeen; and a dynamic geology professor who teaches earth science "as if every day were a geological epoch."

Nearly two million people come to Alaska every summer, some on large cruise ships, some in single kayaks—all in search of the last great wilderness, the Africa of America. It is exactly the America Heacox finds in this story of paradox, love, and loss.
