Summary

In the north of Europe, on the top left-hand tip of a country shaped like a butterfly, lies the Livonian coast: a quiet place with wide sandy beaches, wild forests and not very many people at all.
If you decide to go there yourself and sit on the edge of a forest, you might see some little creatures moving around, smaller than the elks but bigger than the wild boar and badgers…
Can you spot prickly Spendthrift, desperately trying to impress her friends? Over by that little house is Hare, preparing buttercup tea and crisp golden waffles for his sailor friend (and prisoner) Wolf, who just wants to be back at sea. And that worried-looking fellow hurrying up the hill is Squishbod – he really does have a skeleton in his cupboard…
Across nine deeply atmospheric and compelling fairytales, Lilija Berzinska follows the desires and anxieties of a community of mysterious creatures in the north of Latvia, gently exploring their preoccupations and suggesting solutions with resonant empathy and wisdom.
A Skeleton in the Cupboard won the prestigious Latvian Literary Award of the Year (Children's Category) in 2019, with judges noting: 'Lilija Berzinska's tales ooze warmth and sweetness.'
Available since: 09/12/2024.

    Princess Natalia lives in the Kingdom of Colour where she balances nature to make sure her people have enough of everything.
    One day she saves a sapphire bird from choking on white goods. Not native to her own kingdom, the presence of the bird threatens their balance. Natalia begins a quest to return the bird to the other side of the Velvet Vines, the mysterious curtain separating the Kingdom of Colour and the world beyond. She takes the nastiest creature in her realm, Rizzle, to help keep the balance. Natalia is shocked by the despair she discovers outside her own kingdom. She enters a kingdom ruled by a gluttonous enchantress called Millenia who has enslaved her people. Princess Natalia must avoid entrapment by the fireflies, save Rizzle from the brink of death and return the white goods to the baker. Realising the people enslaved by Millenia have little, if anything, to call their own, Natalia knows she cannot continue her own comfortable life while ignoring their plight. With the help of colour, a little magic, Rizzle, the baker and her dearest lion cub, Princess Natalia sets out to bring happiness to this new kingdom. When you have everything and others have nothing, restoring the balance is always the right thing to do.

    Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
    And a merry old soul was he;
    He called for his pipe and he called for his bowl
    And he called for his fiddlers three
    "OLD KING COLE was not always a king, nor was he born a member of any royal family. It was only chance—"hard luck" he used to call it—that made him a king at all. He had always been a poor man, being the son of an apple peddler, who died and left him nothing but a donkey and a fiddle. But that was enough for Cole, who never bothered his head about the world's goods, but took things as they came and refused to worry about anything." and so begins the story of how this happy soul became the king of a country by accident.
