When Clara Wren returns to the decaying halls of Ravenwood Manor, she is immediately pulled into a web of haunting memories, whispered secrets, and a love story that transcends time. Drawn back to the manor under the guise of cataloging its historical artifacts, Clara soon discovers that Ravenwood’s history is far darker—and far more personal—than she ever imagined. A mysterious portrait, eerie whispers, and the unsettling presence of someone who looks strikingly like her awaken an ancient curse that refuses to be buried.

In *Echoes of Passion*, unravel the chilling secrets of Ravenwood as Clara’s connection to the manor deepens and her past collides with its sinister history. Is she doomed to repeat the tragic fate of the woman in the portrait, or will she unlock the truth before Ravenwood claims her too?

Suspenseful, romantic, and filled with gothic allure, *Echoes of Passion* will keep you turning pages late into the night. Perfect for fans of *Rebecca* and *The Haunting of Hill House*, this gripping tale will leave you breathless and craving more.

"The Mystery of Marie Rogêt", often subtitled A Sequel to "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe written in 1842. This is the first murder mystery based on the details of a real crime. It first appeared in Snowden's Ladies' Companion in three installments, November and December 1842 and February 1843. Poe referred to it as one of his "tales of ratiocination". Poe's detective character C. Auguste Dupin and his assistant, the unnamed narrator, undertake the unsolved murder of Marie Rogêt in Paris. The body of Rogêt, a perfume shop employee, is found in the Seine, and the press takes a keen interest in the mystery. Dupin remarks that the newspapers "create a sensation ... [rather] than to further the cause of truth". Even so, he uses the newspaper reports to get into the mind of the murderer.
Dupin rejects the popular theory blaming the murder on a gang of ruffians seen in the area around the time of Rogêt's disappearance. One of such a group, he reasons, would have certainly confessed to the crime due to fear of betrayal rather than a bothered conscience.
Using the known facts in the case, Dupin further determines that a single murderer was involved. This person was probably a sailor, and dragged the victim by the cloth belt around her waist at first, then switched to a cloth around her neck, before dumping the body off a boat into the river. Finding the boat, Dupin suggests, will lead the police to the murderer. An "editor's note" states that it would be inappropriate to relate details of what followed, but that the police did apprehend the true murderer with the help of Dupin's deductions.

An "adventurous . . . intelligent . . . ingenious" novel of crime and punishment in pre–World War II London (V. S. Pritchett).

During a demonstration in Hyde Park, Communist bus driver Jim Drover acts on instinct to protect his wife by stabbing to death the policeman set to strike her down. Sentenced to hang—whether as a martyr, tool, or murderer—Drover accepts his lot, unaware that the ramifications for the crime, and the battle for his reprieve, are inflaming political unrest in an increasingly divided city. But Drover's single, impulsive act is also upending the lives of the people he loves and trusts. Caught in a quicksand of desperation, sexual betrayal, and guilt, they will not only play a part in Drover's fate, but they'll become agents—both unwitting and calculated—of their own fates as well.

Turning the traditional narrative of the police procedural, domestic drama, and political thriller on its head, It's a Battlefield was described by Graham Greene himself as "a panoramic novel of London," one without heroes and villains, only "the injustice of man's justice."
