Summary

"Satellite Network" provides a comprehensive exploration of Starlink's revolutionary satellite constellation project, examining how this ambitious venture aims to transform global internet connectivity through a network of thousands of low Earth orbit satellites. The book skillfully breaks down the three core components of the system: the satellite constellation architecture, ground station infrastructure, and end-user technology, presenting complex technical concepts in an accessible manner. The narrative begins with a historical foundation of satellite communications from the 1960s before diving into Starlink's innovative approach, particularly its use of LEO deployment and inter-satellite laser communications. Through detailed technical specifications and real-world performance data from beta testing programs, readers gain insights into how this massive network operates, including crucial aspects like collision avoidance systems and signal latency management. The book's analysis is supported by extensive research from aerospace engineers, telecommunications experts, and regulatory documentation. What sets this work apart is its interdisciplinary approach, connecting aerospace engineering with telecommunications technology while addressing critical challenges like space debris management and astronomical observation interference. The book progresses logically through technical architecture, ground infrastructure requirements, and broader implications for global connectivity, making it an invaluable resource for both industry professionals and educated general readers interested in the future of space-based communications. Its evidence-based analysis of practical applications, from disaster response to maritime connectivity, provides a solid foundation for understanding this transformative technology.

You are an Agile Coach and your client has asked you a question. He is an engineering manager and the company has just announced a "work from home" policy. Developers may now work from home instead of coming to the office.
The Engineering Manager has asked you if there are any "Agile Metrics" he can use to make sure his developers stay busy and are not being lazy. He is investigating software to record when people log in and log out, and count their keystrokes in between.
What should you tell him to do?
This case and the others in the series come from the real-world experiences of a group of Scrum professionals who meet regularly to discuss the Scrum Framework and how to apply it to actual situations they have encountered. These discussions have been led since 2015 by Frederik Mark Fowler, A Doctor of Scrum and Holder of the Professional Scrum Master level III certification awarded by Scrum.org. Fred has worked with the Scrum Framework for almost 20 years and has trained more then 300 people to become Scrum Masters and Product Owners. How inequality was forged, fought over, and forgotten through public policy in metropolitan Chicago. As in many American metropolitan areas, inequality in Chicagoland is visible in its neighborhoods. These inequalities are not inevitable, however. They have been constructed and deepened by public policies around housing, schooling, taxation, and local governance, including hidden state government policies. In Structuring Inequality, historian Tracy L. Steffes shows how metropolitan inequality in Chicagoland was structured, contested, and naturalized over time even as reformers tried to change it through school desegregation, affordable housing, and property tax reform. While these efforts had modest successes in the city and the suburbs, reformers faced significant resistance and counter-mobilization from affluent suburbanites, real estate developers, and other defenders of the status quo who defended inequality and reshaped the policy conversation about it. Grounded in comprehensive archival research and policy analysis, Structuring Inequality examines the history of Chicagoland’s established systems of inequality and provides perspective on the inequality we live with today.

A lively and engaging account of one human's relationship with a remarkable and charming orphaned beaver kit.On May 10, 2020, an orphaned beaver kit was found in St. Albans, Vermont and handed over to John Aberth, a licensed volunteer wildlife rehabilitator. Over the next two years, John raised the kit, whom he nicknamed "BK," and prepared him for release back into the wild. During that time, John and BK developed a special and unique bond, which John documented in a daily diary. That diary became the basis for Bringing Up Beaver, a lively and engaging account of one human's relationship with a wild animal.Bringing Up Beaver is more than just a feel-good story about human encounters with nature. Full of fascinating observations about beaver behavior and biology, Bringing Up Beaver also documents the unique challenges and obstacles to be faced and overcome in rehabbing a wild beaver kit. Populating the story are plenty of other wild creatures that John encountered in the course of his rehab, including other beavers—one of whom became BK's mate—as well as hawks, owls, mink, and weasels. For anyone who has been charmed by a beaver's smile or enjoyed books like Fox and I and Eager, Bringing Up Beaver is a must-listen that will give us a new perspective on the wildlife and nature that exists all around us.

    Race for Nuclear Weapons during...

Before the Second World War, military conflicts were fought under orthodox conditions, usually termed “conventional warfare,” but several innovations had significantly changed combat, leading inextricably to the race for a nuclear weapon in the 1930s and 1940s. Conflicts had been fought by armies on horseback with guns of varying sophistication since the 16th century, but mechanized warfare and machine guns changed this calculus and set the stage for future combat by the end of World War I. Other sinister changes entered the fray during this conflict, such as chemical weapons like chlorine and mustard gas. The total warfare brought about by World War I and ensuing wars like the Spanish Civil War made the quest for the most powerful weapons somewhat necessary.
The Manhattan Project would ultimately yield the “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” bombs that released more than 100 Terajoules of energy at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but as it turned out, the Axis were not far behind with their own nuclear weapons program. When the Nazis’ quest for a nuclear weapon began in earnest in 1939, no one really had a handle on how important nuclear weapons would prove to war and geopolitics. The attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, along with the Cold War-era tests and their accompanying mushroom clouds, would demonstrate the true power and terror of nuclear weapons, but in the late 1930s these bombs were only vaguely being thought through, particularly after the successful first experiment to split the atom by a German scientist. The nuclear age itself was in its infancy, barely 35 years old, but within a few short years the advent of nuclear war loomed over the world and the prospect of the enemy winning the nuclear race kept Allied leaders awake at night.
