Sinopsis

In "Captain Sword and Captain Pen: A Poem," Leigh Hunt weaves a remarkable narrative that juxtaposes the martial valor of Captain Sword with the intellectual prowess of Captain Pen. Rich in lyrical quality and employing a satirical tone, Hunt deftly critiques the warlike tendencies of society while elevating the written word as a force for peace and progress. The poem unfolds in a series of vivid, imaginative stanzas, reflecting the Romantic period's emphasis on individualism and introspection, and highlights the battle between destructive violence and the redemptive power of art and literature. Leigh Hunt, a prominent figure in the Romantic literary movement, was not only a poet but also a journalist and social activist. His lifelong advocacy for freedom of expression and social reform, paired with his friendships with influential writers such as John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, profoundly shaped his worldview. "Captain Sword and Captain Pen" encapsulates his views on the moral responsibilities of the artist in society, showcasing his belief in the transformative power of words against the harsh realities of war. This poem is essential for anyone interested in Romantic literature or the interplay of art and politics. Hunt's eloquent exploration of these themes remains strikingly relevant today, making it a fascinating read for poets, historians, and anyone who seeks to understand the complexities of human conflict and creativity.

Elinor Morton Hoyt was born on 7th September, 1885 in Somerville, New Jersey and from age 12 grew up in Washington D C where her father served as assistant attorney general and later solicitor general. Her early education together with her renowned beauty suggests she was being trained for life as a debutante but her life quickly found another route as she became absorbed in the world of books.

An early marriage following her graduation ended when, after being pursued by Horace Wylie, 17 years her senior and a married Washington lawyer with three children, she eloped to England with him. His wife would not divorce him and the subsequent scandal was widely publicised further fueled by the suicide in 1912 of her abandoned husband.

With Wylie's encouragement she published in 1912, ‘Incidental Number’, assembled from poems of the previous decade.

Despite a child from her first marriage Elinor subsequently endured miscarriages, a stillbirth and a premature child who lived for only one week. When Wylie’s deserted wife agreed to a divorce, the couple returned to the United States and married but they were already drawing apart.

In 1921, Elinor’s ‘Nets to Catch the Wind’, was published. It was an immediate success and a prize-winner. In New York’s literary circles she found her next husband who acted as her agent – the poer William Rose Benét, brother of the famed Stephen. They married in 1923 and that same year ‘Black Armor’, was published. The New York Times said "There is not a misplaced word or cadence in it." She also published her first of four novels, ‘Jennifer Lom’, to excellent reviews.

She worked for a time as the poetry editor of Vanity Fair, an editor of Literary Guild, and a contributing editor of The New Republic. Her third book of poetry, ‘Trivial Breath’ arrived in 1928 as did the failure of her marriage with Benét.

She moved again to England and fell in love with a friend’s husband, to whom she wrote, and later published a series of 19 sonnets; ‘Angels and Earthly Creatures’.

Elinor Wylie suffered high blood pressure all her adult life and this eventually led to her death at Benet’s New York apartment on 16th December, 1928 where she suffered a stroke. She was 43.

Life is full of love, but it is also full of loss. Like paper cuts to the heart, every big and seemingly insignificant loss—the loss of friendships, faith, dreams, health, community, and everything in between—grieves us more than we think it will, and often more than we let on. Why? Because they matter.

In this compassionate and deeply personal book, Rachel Marie Kang invites you to see and be seen in the midst of your sorrow, your suffering—your story. Through prose and poetry that gives voice to all the things we lose along the way, this gracious book will help you

    ● ponder your loss without judgment

    ● remember what was and make meaning of your memories

    ● reflect on what is yet to be as you heal with hope

You don't have to bury your pain, and you don't have to pretend you're over it just because the world thinks you should be. Let Rachel walk hand in hand with you, giving space for sorrow and welcoming you as you find your way along the path to healing.

    The dark of night
    And know the truth
    That lies in the soul
    Realize your divinity
    Let yourself become whole
