Summary

What do we mean by social class in the 21st century?

University of Brighton sociologists Laura Harvey and Sarah Leaney and award-winning comics creator Danny Noble present an utterly unique, illustrated journey through the history, sociology and lived experience of class.

What can class tell us about gentrification, precarious work, the role of elites in society, or access to education? How have thinkers explored class in the past, and how does it affect us today? How does class inform activism and change?
Class: A Graphic Guide challenges simplistic and stigmatising ideas about working-class people, discusses colonialist roots of class systems, and looks at how class intersects with race, sexuality, gender, disability and age. From the publishers of the bestselling Queer: A Graphic History, this is a vibrant, enjoyable introduction for students, community workers, activists and anyone who wants to understand how class functions in their own lives.

Provincial Perspectives offers a fresh look at the Roman Empire—not from the towering marble forums of Rome itself, but from the towns, markets, homes, and lives of those who lived across its vast and diverse provinces. This 3-in-1 volume explores how everyday people, local cultures, and distant regions shaped the Roman world far beyond its capital.
The Roman Empire’s Provinces uncovers the administrative, cultural, and military roles of regions from Gaul to Egypt, Britannia to Asia Minor, showing how these far-flung lands maintained both Roman identity and local uniqueness. The Economy of Rome dives into the networks of trade, labor, agriculture, and taxation that kept the empire running—revealing the economic machinery that powered the Roman engine. Finally, Women in Ancient Rome brings forward the voices and lives of Roman women—rulers, merchants, mothers, and slaves—who navigated a world of patriarchy with surprising influence and resilience.
Rich with insight, this collection breaks from traditional empire-focused narratives and gives readers a deeper understanding of Roman life from the ground up. Whether you're passionate about ancient history, women's studies, economics, or global empires, this trilogy offers a unique and enlightening lens into Rome’s wider world.

    NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
“Savagery appeased can only grow. Once you give in to it, it must escalate, like a fire searching for air.”
The man who won the Pulitzer Prize for GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, who wrote the classic films THE VERDICT and WAG THE DOG sounds his alarm about the Visigoths at our gates.
In RECESSIONAL he calls out, skewers, mocks, and, most importantly, dissects the virus of conformity which is now an existential threat to the West.
A broad-ranging journey through history, the Bible, and literature, RECESSIONAL examines how politics and cultural attitudes about rebellion have shifted in the United States in the last generation. By screaming down freedom of thought and expression, Mamet explains, we kill invention and democracy – the foundations of security and growth.
A wickedly funny, wistful and wry appeal to the free-thinking citizen, RECESSIONAL is a vital warning that if we don’t confront the cultural thuggery now, the commissars and their dupes will transform the Land of the Free into the dictatorship at which they aim.

The Chile Project - The Story of...

In The Chile Project, Sebastian Edwards tells the story of how the neoliberal economic model came to an end in 2021, when Gabriel Boric was elected president, vowing that "If Chile was the cradle of neoliberalism, it will also be its grave." More than a story about one Latin American country, The Chile Project is a behind-the-scenes history of the spread and consequences of the free-market thinking that dominated economic policymaking around the world in the second half of the twentieth century—but is now on the retreat.

In 1955, the United States State Department launched the "Chile Project" to train Chilean economists at the University of Chicago. After General Augusto Pinochet overthrew socialist president Salvador Allende in 1973, Chile's "Chicago Boys" implemented the purest neoliberal model for the next seventeen years, undertaking a package of privatization and deregulation, creating a modern capitalist economy, and sparking talk of a "Chilean miracle." But under the veneer of success, a profound dissatisfaction with the inequalities caused by neoliberalism was growing. In 2019, protests erupted throughout the country, and in 2022 Boric began his presidency with a clear mandate: to end neoliberalismo.

The Chile Project provides an important new perspective on the history of neoliberalism and its global decline today.
