They came to our world a hundred years ago. Before we knew it they overran the world, destroyed our infrastructure and now we live in habitats. That's the best we can call our living accommodations. They terraformed the world…
What remains of humanity whispers about a plan to evacuate some of us. They claim that scientists hid away in a bunker somewhere where they retro-fitted one of their spaceships.
We don't know if it's true, but as we watch them lead away groups of humans from the nearest habitats, we decide to chance our escape.

Spellmaster Geraldine Hartford has everything she could want — a successful spell shop and close friends and family — but she's still waiting on her own swoon-worthy romance. Her friends think their matchmaking efforts are helping, but it's the tall, handsome stranger in town who immediately catches Gerry's eye.
Basil Thorne's life has turned upside down. After his father's death, he's found himself uprooted from Bath to become the head of a family he barely knows. Overwhelmed by responsibilities, not to mention the clamor of Tutting-on-Cress locals wishing to befriend him — only the lovely spellmaster with a twinkling smile seems to soothe Basil's heart.
And he's not the only one who's noticed…
Soon it seems as though everyone in Gerry and Basil's lives is determined to match them up. But Gerry is waiting for the surefire spark of romance and Basil is waiting until his life settles down.
They may be perfect for each other, but it will take some meddling — and a bit of magic — to bring them together.

This short story was first written and published in the year 1957, as part of a collection of short science fiction stories in the collection Astounding Science Fiction. Piper's story is unusual in focusing on the problem of archaeology on an alien culture. How is is possible to decipher writings of an alien race that died out 50,000 years ago? What could we possibly have in common with them? There can be no 'Rosetta Stone' with a shared language so is it impossible? That is the struggle of the protagonist and against all odds she does indeed find a way for our two cultures to meet. An excellent story well written.
