Summary

The "Global Fishing Industry" explores the critical balance between utilizing our oceans for food and protecting marine ecosystems. It examines how global fishing practices, from small local operations to large-scale industrial ventures, impact food security while also contributing to overfishing. Understanding these impacts is crucial, especially given that unchecked fishing practices could lead to irreversible ecological damage and long-term food shortages.

The book traces the evolution of fishing technologies, highlighting the rise of industrial fishing and the growing demand for seafood. It delves into how practices like bottom trawling, bycatch, and habitat destruction affect marine biodiversity, even leading to fisheries collapses.

A key focus is on sustainable solutions like marine protected areas and catch quotas, analyzing their social, economic, and political effects.

This book progresses systematically, beginning with an overview of the industry's scale and economic significance, then moves into ecological consequences, and concludes with conservation strategies. It emphasizes the need for a transition to sustainable fishing practices guided by scientific data and international cooperation, offering a balanced perspective suitable for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and anyone interested in marine conservation.

The weird, wacky and wonderful betting exploits of an unconventional gambler who takes the biggest risk of his life to give up his day job and try to make a living on chance.
The Gambler reveals the highs and lows, the joy and despair, and the sheer lunacy of someone willing to risk it all on the most outlandish outcomes, from betting on the winner of Eurovision and Strictly to whether a pair of pandas might mate.

As a pioneer in the field of TV betting, Rob thinks he has uncovered the path to untold riches, winning big on Strictly Come Dancing, X Factor, Eurovision – you name it.
While millions sat on their sofas watching and wondering who might win or who’d be evicted from their favourite shows that week, Rob would be working out the odds, checking his formulas and gambling big.
With similarities to international bestseller Moneyball and Harry Findlay’s Gambling For Life: The Man Who Won Millions And Spent Every Penny, Rob’s book takes readers into the fascinating world of TV gambling and beyond.
Surviving the nerve-jangling moments waiting and watching to see if his luck was in or if he’d be on the breadline that week, Rob honed his skills over years to seem almost psychic.
And he didn’t stop at TV, branching out to take a chance gambling on everything from the mating habits of pandas in a zoo to whether a superstar will sing with their top off on stage.
But he soon discovers that cleaning up with the bookies comes at a huge cost. With his trading exploits taking over his every waking thought, and creating a life of desolate solitude Robinson Crusoe would be proud of, he fears his obsessive pursuit of the golden ticket is poised to end unhappily, in lonely bachelorhood.
So he decides to take his longest shot yet – heading off into the wilds of provincial Russia, with dreams of a James Bond-style tryst with a mystery woman who could yet turn out to be a vodka-drinking scammer aiming to fleece him out of house and home.
Detailing the often weird and downright wacky investments Rob makes over two decades of betting, The Gambler reveals the roller coaster world of someone willing to risk it all on the most outlandish outcomes, including when it comes to seeking romance.
Quirky, irreverent and authentic, this is a deeper tale about adventure, taking a leap of faith, and seeking to beat the odds.

A journey through Britain’s first National Park on its 75th anniversary
On a spring day in 1932, 400 disgruntled ramblers embarked on a 'mass trespass' of Kinder Scout, a plateau in the Peak District in northern England. Their aim? To establish a right to roam across the rugged landscape, against the wishes of wealthy landowners.
The hikers were seeking respite from the smoky industrial centres of Manchester and Sheffield – and eventually they got what they wanted. In 1951, the Peak District was established as Britain’s first national park. Home to striking dragon-back ridges of rock, vast expanses of peat, farms and villages, cloughs and caverns, the Peak is much more than the 'howling wilderness' described by Daniel Defoe three centuries ago.
With the 75th anniversary of the park’s creation looming, how has this dramatic landscape fared since? Celebrated travel writer Tom Chesshyre hit the trails on a 363-mile ramble to find out – and to celebrate this symbolic home of hiking.
Wild Peaks follows winding paths, pausing at old inns and mountain huts, and along the way meeting a rich cast of landowners, farmers, historians, mountaineers, publicans, rangers, right-to-roamers, homeless travellers, mountain rescue members, mystics, dreamers and fellow hikers.
Don your cagoule, grab a compass, and join Tom as he explores how the land has changed, and how we have too.

Tele Aadsen met the ocean as a child when her parents traded jobs as veterinarians for a migratory life shared with sea birds, salmon, and fishermen. In the mist of the Tongass rainforest, Tele learned to explore life within endless shades of gray, coming to know firsthand how fine the line between life and death and the precarious balance of sea, land, and sky. She’s spent the four decades since trolling for salmon off Southeast Alaska.
In What Water Holds, a series of lyrical essays first shared at Oregon’s FisherPoets Gathering, Tele examines questions of equity, identity, community, the changing climate, and sustainability with loving, detailed attention, revealing the complexities within their many shades of gray. Weaving stories of what lies beneath the surface and the possibilities beyond, What Water Holds speaks to anyone who has fallen under the spell of the sea, struggled to find their own uncharted path, and wrestled with big philosophical questions – in short, anyone seeking to live a full, deeply considered life.
“In this beautiful, brave, knowledgeable collection, Aadsen invites us to examine an industry with clear eyes. Her recollections are rich and poignant, and her eye for social critique is unwavering as she lays bare the complexities of fishing life. Gender, death, power, history, relationships, and the natural world all come under her gaze and are shared with ruthless love.”
