Through her keen observations and exquisite prose, she encapsulates the trials and tribulations of colonial life, weaving a rich tapestry that highlights both the beauty and harshness of the landscape. Her narrative is characterized by an engaging blend of personal anecdotes and social commentary, set against a backdrop of a rapidly changing society. Lady Barker's literary style combines elements of travel writing and memoir, providing readers with a unique glimpse into the domestic and pastoral experiences of her time, whilst situating her work amidst the broader context of colonial literature in the Victorian era. Lady Barker, born in England, was not just an observer but an active participant in the challenges and joys of frontier life. Her own journey to New Zealand, propelled by personal circumstances and adventurous spirit, shaped her perspective as she embraced a world filled with both promise and adversity. Her ability to capture the nuances of daily life in an unfamiliar land reflects her keen sensitivity to cultural and environmental themes, drawing on her diverse experiences as a wife and mother in the colonial setting. Wovoka (1867-1932), the Ghost Dance Prophet, was a member of the Walker River band of Paiutes, in western Nevada. The Walker River Reservation was established in 1859 and was Wokova’s home off and on for years. Wovoka was also known as Jack Wilson, a name he acquired while he was, for some years, employed on the David Wilson family ranch in the Mason Valley. At that time in Nevada, Indians not living on a reservation often lived on a ranch. Wovoka was exposed to the pious Wilson family’s daily Bible readings, and that may have helped shape his own beliefs.
His father was a traditional medicine man, himself a devotee of an earlier prophet. In 1889, Wovoka followed his father in also becoming a medicine man. The year, Wovoka had a series of visions that led to what is sometimes called the Ghost Dance religion, which spread like wildfire across much of the West in 1889 and 1890.
Wovoka’s 1889 visions grew into a new religion that gripped the hopes and imaginations of dozens of tribal groups, and it eventually extended over much of the West. It was a kind of antidote for defeat and cultural dislocation. The Lakota Sioux in particular were so caught up in the Ghost Dance and their adaptation of Wovoka’s revelations that they remain strongly associated with the Ghost Dance more than a century later.

The traditional view of leadership has often focused on authority and power, but in the modern world, leadership is about influence, empathy, and vision. It’s about guiding others through uncertainty and inspiring change through action. The leaders we need are those who can adapt to new circumstances, challenge the status quo, and unite others in pursuit of a common goal. To nurture these qualities in young people, we must first understand what leadership truly entails in today’s world.
Parents and mentors are the primary sources of influence for the next generation. They hold the responsibility of laying the foundation for young minds to grow into strong, confident, and ethical leaders. While natural talent and charisma certainly play a role in leadership, the development of leadership qualities is largely a result of intentional guidance and opportunities for growth. From a young age, children must be exposed to values such as integrity, responsibility, and empathy, which are at the heart of effective leadership.
Leadership is not something that can be taught in a classroom alone; it is cultivated through experiences, challenges, and real-world application. Encouraging children to take initiative, make decisions, and face obstacles head-on provides them with the tools they need to become self-assured leaders. It’s also essential that they learn how to inspire and uplift those around them, as true leadership is about empowering others to succeed.
