Summary

The Master Key: An Electrical Fairy Tale, Founded Upon the Mysteries of Electricity and the Optimism of Its Devotees is a novel by L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The protagonist is a boy named Rob Joslyn. His age is not specified. Baum dedicated the book "To My Son, Robert Stanton Baum," who was born in 1886 and would thus have been about fifteen at the time it was published.

Rob is an electrical experimenter whose father encourages him and sees that he "never lacked batteries, motors or supplies of any sort." A "network of wires soon ran throughout the house". He loses track of the elaborately interconnected wires, and trying to get a cardboard house to light up, he "experimented in a rather haphazard fashion, connecting this and that wire blindly and by guesswork, in the hope that he would strike the right combination." There is a bright flash, and a being who calls himself the Demon of Electricity appears. He tells Rob that he has accidentally "touched the Master Key of Electricity" and is entitled to "to demand from me three gifts each week for three successive weeks." Rob protests that he does not know what to ask for, and the Demon agrees to select the gifts himself. Over the next two weeks, Rob experiences adventures exploring the use of the Demon's gifts, but eventually concludes that neither he nor the world is ready for them. On the third week, Rob rejects the Demon's gifts and tells him to bide his time until humankind knows how to use them. The Demon leaves. With a light heart, Rob concludes that he made the right decision.

In this chapter, the story shifts to Dr. John Seward’s perspective as he grows alarmed over Lucy Westenra’s rapidly worsening condition. Despite care and rest, Lucy grows paler and weaker by the day, her vitality draining as if from some unseen nightly visitor. Seward’s medical expertise cannot explain the strange marks on her throat, nor her unsettling habit of wandering in her sleep.
Desperate to help her, Seward writes to his friend — Lucy’s fiancé, Arthur Holmwood — urging him to return to Whitby at once. But Arthur is tied up with his gravely ill father, leaving Seward to act alone. Recognizing that Lucy’s illness lies beyond conventional medicine, he sends for his old mentor, the brilliant and enigmatic Professor Abraham Van Helsing.
A sense of dread deepens as nightfall continues to bring danger. Something sinister is feeding on Lucy’s life, and the arrival of Van Helsing marks the beginning of a new battle — one waged not only with science, but with ancient forces that defy reason.
This is Chapter 10 of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne — part of a complete chapter-by-chapter audiobook experience capturing the Gothic suspense, emotional stakes, and creeping supernatural terror of this classic novel.

MERCY RILEY is thrust into life in the cramped, cold little room down back of Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrows Mother and Baby Home. In the rarely-visited coastal village of Weary Bay. A place of shame, Mercy is born and raised a secret. Never permitted to know her mother, her name concocted for expedience by strangers. While social acceptability is not her destiny neither is obscurity and around the age of thirteen she escapes. Lost and vulnerable she is discovered and aided by Black Annis, not even slightly mortal. Taken in by the Travelers she is sequestered, for her protection and education, with Maisie Raith the Weary Bay’s generations-long practitioner of witchcraft, where she learns some semblance of what it means to live beyond a walled, barred institution. She learns to heal and foretell a person’s death through tarot cards, but she is also taught—maybe randomly, maybe by design—to kill with precision.
At the very close of winter, the city of New Rathmore is rendered powerless beneath the frozen discord of a late season arctic ice vortex. The metaphor of From Winter, Spring is Born, is sung in folktales the world over; is anthropomorphized, of necessity, for children and should change as a youngster becomes adult but… What of truth? What is the game and how serious are the players? And where are the rules?
Almost everyone underestimates Mercy Riley. Most do not realize she is not—and never will be—like them.
The Legends of the Sídhe series is a rewilded ecology in language contemporary mythology.
