Synopsis

Robert Oakeshott was of a man of humorous eccentricity and intoxicating discourse, a man of many lives. As an Oxford undergraduate in 1956 he hitch-hiked into Budapest at the height of the student-led revolution, carrying nothing but moral support and a suitcase of penicillin. Then foreign correspondent for the Financial Times, key development officer in Zambia at the time of independence, alternative educationist in Botswana. He founded a think tank in the UK to promote justice and fairness in the workplace through employee ownership, an economic model that he took to Eastern Europe in the 1990s. Simultaneously, he was a generous philanthropist who played a leading role in the founding of pioneering charities.

With time, I became empowered to conquer the endless challenges to happiness. Traveling the path that I did opened my spirit to wisdom and enlightenment, as I came to find forgiveness as the key to survival in this world.

The real guide to pregnancy, birth and beyond.
I’m assuming you’ve picked up this book because you’re either curious about having kids, you’re currently up the duff, or you’re stumbling through the early days of parenthood with a mattress-sized sanitary towel between your legs wondering what the hell has just happened. That, or you’re killing time in WHSmith, waiting for your flight to Ibiza. You lucky bastard.
Either way, this book is your pregnancy, birth and postpartum BFF.
Welcome to Motherhood, Bitches is your one-stop, no-filter guide to everything from swollen vulvas and dinner-plate areolas; from shitting in labour to the horror of postpartum haemorrhoids; from mindless sleep deprivation to salvaging a sex life when your pelvic floor has hit the floor. But mainly, it’s a reassuring reminder that feeling slightly (or shockingly) out of control with a newborn baby human is entirely normal…we promise.
Victoria Emes, in her best-selling autobiography, shares her experiences of childbirth, parenting, and the impact on her marriage. With humour and care, she navigates the reader through the realities of family life and the importance of maintaining health and fitness.

On the morning of 16 December 1944, a monumental German force of six hundred thousand men crashed into the Allied lines in the snowbound hills of the Belgian Ardennes. Why were Allied forces so surprised by this counterattack? And why have the German sabotage and deception operations that disrupted supply lines and outwitted Allied intelligence been so overlooked by historians?

Through interviews with three key German officers undertaken shortly after the end of the war, Charles Whiting examines the Battle of the Bulge from a new perspective. Hermann Giskes, a German Army counterintelligence officer, sheds light on his activities directing spies and saboteurs. Paratrooper Freiherr von der Heydte tells how his men were blown over great distances but managed to engage and tie down thousands of Allied troops who thought Nazi paratroopers were landing everywhere. And SS commando leader Otto Skorzeny recounts how he led a handful of special forces, wearing US uniforms and driving US equipment, behind enemy lines to wreak havoc.

Ardennes: The Secret War exposes the weaknesses of Allied intelligence and shows how, even when it seemed that the war would be over by Christmas, the Germans nearly turned defeat into victory.

THIS AUTUMN'S MUST-HAVE AUTOBIOGRAPHY'A split-second decision is all it takes. A decision that can change the course of a cricket match. Maybe even the course of your life.'In Coming Home, Freddie Flintoff zeroes-in on the crucial moments that made him - some highly celebrated, others less well-known, away from the cameras, but all pivotal in shaping the man he is.As a boy, growing up in Preston, Fred fell in love with the game of cricket. It gave him his route through life; out on the pitch he felt at home. Through his eyes we see him picking up a bat for the first time, his early years on the field; that incredible performance to win the Ashes against the Aussies in 2005; face-downs with rivals; run-ins with the media; the doctors telling him he can't continue to play. On and off the pitch, in and out of the spotlight, Fred tells the whole story. After retiring, Fred thought he'd left the game behind, relaunching himself in the world of entertainment, but following the car crash that turned his life upside down, it was cricket to which he returned.Coming Home is a reflection on a unique life, a story like no other, and a love letter to the game that made him. Honest, open, reflective and funny, like the man himself, this is Freddie Flintoff, in full, in his own words.
