This book explores ideas around minimalism, simplicity and how to live comfortably with less.

The modern world can be a complicated, frenzied, and noisy place, filled with too many options, products, ideas and opinions. That explains why what many of us long for is simplicity: a life that can be more pared down, peaceful, and focused on the essentials.

But finding simplicity is not always easy; it isn’t just a case of emptying out our closets or trimming back commitments in our diaries. True simplicity requires that we understand the roots of our distractions – and develop a canny respect for the stubborn reasons why things can grow complex and overwhelming.

This book is a guide to the simpler lives we crave and deserve. It considers how we might achieve simplicity across a range of areas. Along the way, we learn about Zen Buddhism, modernist architecture, monasteries, psychoanalysis, and why we probably don’t need more than three good friends or a few treasured belongings.

It isn’t enough that our lives should look simple; they need to be simple from the inside. This book takes a psychological approach, guiding us towards less contorted hearts and minds. We have for too long been drowning in excess and clutter from a confusion about our aspirations; A Simpler Life helps us tune out the static and focus on what properly matters to us.

Nefertiti, one of ancient Egypt’s most captivating and influential queens, remains a figure shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Her name, meaning “the beautiful one has come,” hints at her exotic origins, though little is known for certain about her early life. Some historians believe she was a member of the Egyptian nobility, possibly the daughter of Ay, a prominent official. Others suggest foreign origins, potentially linking her to Mitanni royalty. Regardless of her birthplace, Nefertiti’s remarkable journey from obscurity to queenhood is a testament to her enduring legacy.
Nefertiti’s life took a dramatic turn when she married Amenhotep IV, later known as Akhenaten. Their union marked the beginning of one of ancient Egypt’s most transformative periods. As Akhenaten’s Great Royal Wife, Nefertiti played a central role in the royal family, often depicted alongside her husband in scenes of worship and domestic life. Their partnership appeared to be one of both love and power, as Nefertiti is shown participating actively in religious ceremonies and royal duties, signifying her status as more than just a consort.
Upon ascending to the throne, Akhenaten and Nefertiti initiated radical religious changes, abandoning traditional polytheism in favor of the monotheistic worship of Aten, the sun disk. This religious revolution, known as the Amarna Period, saw the couple establish a new capital, Akhetaten, modern-day Amarna. Nefertiti’s involvement in this spiritual shift was profound, as she was frequently depicted alongside Akhenaten, worshiping Aten with equal devotion. She became a symbol of the new religious order, embodying divine femininity and royal authority.

The Story of Australia - From...

For an estimated 60,000 years, Indigenous Australians inhabited the vast and diverse landscapes of the continent, developing rich cultures, complex social structures, and deep spiritual connections to the land. Long before European arrival, hundreds of distinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations thrived across Australia, each with unique languages, traditions, and ways of life. Their existence was deeply rooted in an intimate understanding of the environment, shaping a sustainable way of living that allowed them to flourish in regions ranging from arid deserts to lush coastal plains.
Central to Indigenous Australian culture was the Dreamtime, a spiritual belief system that explained the creation of the land, its people, and its natural features. These stories, passed down through generations, connected individuals to their ancestors and dictated social laws, customs, and responsibilities. The land was not seen as something to be owned but rather as a living entity to be respected and cared for. This relationship fostered sophisticated land management practices, such as controlled burns to regenerate vegetation, ensuring the survival of both the people and the ecosystem.
Trade networks existed long before European contact, linking different Indigenous groups across the continent. These exchanges included tools, ochre, food, and ceremonial items, highlighting the complexity of Aboriginal societies. The northern coastal communities also engaged in trade with seafarers from Southeast Asia, particularly the Makassan fishermen from present-day Indonesia, who arrived seasonally to harvest sea cucumbers. This interaction, occurring centuries before European exploration, demonstrates the long-standing external connections Indigenous Australians maintained.
