Summary

FICTION THAT REFUSED TO STAY QUIET. Colleen Hoover didn’t rise through the literary world the “right” way—she detonated inside it. Her novels didn’t simply sell; they spread, behaving less like books and more like cultural events. Passed hand to hand on social media, dissected in comment sections, loved fiercely and criticized loudly, her stories escaped the boundaries of fiction and entered the public psyche in ways publishing never anticipated. This biography isn’t about plot summaries or polite praise. It examines how Hoover’s emotionally volatile stories ignited readers into evangelists, how TikTok turned backlist novels into chart-dominating forces, and why her work provokes reactions that feel personal, urgent, and impossible to ignore. We explore how vulnerability, controversy, and reader identification combined to create a feedback loop where fiction didn’t just reflect culture—it actively shaped it.Colleen Hoover’s career forces an uncomfortable question: what happens when stories stop behaving like products and start acting like movements? This is the definitive look at an author whose work blurred the line between art, audience, and algorithm—and why her impact reveals something unsettling and powerful about how modern fiction truly spreads.

My name is James Jerome Hankins. My mother, Faldenia, an AMEZ teacher gave me my first name James after St. James who said" if you have faith but don't do any work to help others, you are "nothing". My father, Edward, a Catholic barber gave me my middle name Jerome after St. Jerome who translated the bible from Greek to Latin and is the patron saint of writers. My last name, Hankins, came from my brave slave ancestor, "American Hero" Abraham Galloway. My cousin Abraham Galloway lived only 33 years (1837-1870) but he accomplished so much for our people. His country treated him as a 3rd class piece of property, but he like Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Medgar, Martin and Malcom refused to bow and worship a man -made golden idol.
My education started at St. Thomas Catholic private elementary school in Wilmington, NC to Shawtown High school in Lillington, NC to Williston Senior High in Wilmington, NC to North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC.
I have written guest commentary in three great black newspapers, Wilmington Journal, Greater Diversity and The County News. I also post on Facebook at least three times a month. This is my second book.
I have served as an Estate Administrator, power of attorney for a family friend, caregiver and court appointed guardian.
Last but not least I have been a 98% voter, volunteer register and precinct official in my Democratic party.

My Secret Life is an anonymously penned memoir written during a period from the 1840s to the 1880s by a wealthy and sex obsessed English gentleman who refers to himself simply as ‘Walter’. Part confessional, part investigative erotic journalism, it meticulously documents every detail of the author’s prolific sexual encounters, offering us in the process an eye and thigh opening account of life behind closed doors in the Victorian age.

Women, in both mind and body, were the all consuming object of Walter’s interest. From early youth through to old age his quest for erotic discovery and adventure with them was never diminished.

Unlike contemporary 19th century erotic texts, such as The Pearl, whose sole object was to titillate, Walter’s interest in his subjects did not end with the extinguishing of the carnal flame. His hunger to understand the circumstances and minds of the women he encountered is never upstaged by the sex. Their potted life histories, their most intimate desires and acts were shared with him and in turn meticulously recorded by him, written down verbatim while still fresh in his mind.

The resulting poignant record of a lost era and the intimate moments of the women who inhabited it offer us a remarkable insight into the 19th century that cannot be gleaned from any other source.

The complete unabridged text is being released as a fully scored audiofilm (an audio book with accompanying music soundtrack) by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins.

An author’s walk “from source to sea along the Ouse in Sussex is a meandering, meditative delight” drawing on history, literature, and the river itself (The Guardian, UK). In To The River, author Olivia Laing embarks on a weeklong, midsummer odyssey along the banks of the River Ouse in Sussex, England, from its source near Haywards Heath to the sea, where it empties into the Channel at Newhaven. More than sixty years after Virginia Woolf drowned herself in the River Ouse, Laing still finds inspiration and guidance in the author’s abiding presence. Through cow pastures, woods, and neighborhood streets, Laing’s meandering walk occasions a profound and haunting reflection on histories both personal and cultural, and on landscapes both physical and emotional. Along the way, she explores the roles that rivers play in human lives, tracing their intricate flow through literature, mythology and folklore. Lyrical and stirring, To the River is a passionate investigation into how history resides in a landscape - and how ghosts never quite leave the places they love.“Magical…By turns lyrical, melancholic and exultant, To the River just makes you want to follow Olivia Laing all the way to the sea.”—Daily Telegraph, UK
