Summary

"Winnetou, the Apache Knight" offers a compelling exploration of cross-cultural encounters amidst the frontier'Äôs rugged landscapes. This anthology presents a tapestry of narratives that delve into themes of nobility, justice, and identity, captured through a delicate fusion of adventure and poignant human stories. The collection dynamically shifts from introspective soliloquies to sweeping narratives, echoing the stylistic and thematic diversity of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each piece unfolds against the backdrop of the American West, offering readers glimpses into a largely mythologized era, while simultaneously challenging those myths with nuanced storytelling and conflicting perspectives. Karl May, a celebrated figure in German literature, and Marion Ames Taggart, an influential American writer, craft narratives that transcend mere adventure stories. Their contributions illuminate various cultural landscapes, echoing the ethos of a time when the frontier spirit captured imaginations worldwide. Both authors engage deeply with historical and literary movements of their times, drawing from Romantic and Realist influences to craft tales that are equally entertaining and enlightening. Together, their writings foster an enriched understanding of frontier life, bridging two continents with stories that probe deeply into human connection and cultural identity. This anthology is an invaluable resource for readers eager to traverse historical and cultural boundaries through literature. It invites the audience to engage with myriad perspectives, each offering a unique lens on the complex interplay of personal honor and societal change. "Winnetou, the Apache Knight" not only broadens the reader's literary horizons but also prompts critical reflections on the narratives that define our understanding of history and culture. Ideal for both scholarly exploration and casual enjoyment, this collection promises to be a rich addition to any reader'Äôs library, binding past and present in a shared narrative experience."}

    An inspiring, deeply personal story about a tumultuous period in civil rights history...In the summer of 1964, the FBI found the smoldering remains of the station wagon that James Chaney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman had been driving before their disappearance. Shortly after this awful discovery, Julie Kabat’s beloved brother Luke arrived as a volunteer for the Mississippi Summer Project. Teaching biology to Freedom School students in Meridian, Luke became one of more than seven hundred student volunteers who joined experienced Black civil rights workers and clergy to challenge white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state. During his time in Mississippi, Luke helped plan the community memorial service for Chaney, attended the Democratic National Convention in support of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and even spent time in jail for “contributing to the delinquency of minors.” This arrest followed his decision to take students out for ice cream. Through his activism, Luke grappled with many issues that continue to haunt and divide us today: racialized oppression, threats of violence, and segregation whether explicit in law or implicit through custom.Sadly, Luke died just two years after Freedom Summer, leaving behind copious letters, diaries, and essays, as well as a lasting impact on his younger sister, nicknamed “Pig.” Drawing on a wealth of primary resources, especially her brother’s letters and diaries, Kabat delves deep into her family history to understand Luke’s motivations for joining the movement and documents his experiences as an activist. In addition to Luke’s personal narrative, Kabat includes conversations with surviving Freedom School volunteers and students who declare the life-long legacy of Freedom Summer. A sister’s tribute to her brother, Love Letter from Pig: My Brother’s Story of Freedom Summer addresses ongoing issues of civil rights and racial inequality facing the nation today.

    'A memoir that captivates and delights. Fabulous' —Nina Stibbe

    Autumn 1993. The former USSR. Viv is about to turn twenty-one and is on a study year abroad, supposedly immersed in the language, history, and politics of a world that has just ceased to exist: the Soviet Union.

    Instead, she finds herself immersed in Bogdan Bogdanovich—the lead guitarist of a Ukrainian punk rock band. As the temperature drops, he promises that if she can get through the freezing Russian winter, he will give her "one Ukrainian summer." But is he serious about her? Or is she just another groupie?

    At parties, gigs, and dive bars, Viv and her new friends argue over whose turn it is to buy cigarettes, the best places to find Levi's jeans and whether beer counts as a soft drink. No one debates the merits of speaking Ukrainian over Russian, the precise location of the border, or the undeniable brightness of the future. Of course good times are here to stay. Because the Soviet Union is finished. Isn't it?

    A poignant and often comical account of coming-of-age in the time after the Cold War and before Putin, One Ukrainian Summer is a love letter to a unique moment in history.

    G K Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was a poet, novelist, playwright, literary commentator, editor, biographer, journalist, orator and theologian. He was often dubbed as the “prince of paradox” for his light whimsical style that often addressed serious issues such as politics and religion. The latter was as a member and defender of the Christian faith and the former was shaped by a distrust of concentrated wealth and power. He advocated Distributionism and said that every man should be allowed to own "three acres and a cow." These political views have spread round the world, crediting Chesterton as the father of the “small is beautiful” movement. It is also said to have influenced Gandhi in seeking a genuine nationalism for India rather than imitating the British state.
    Chesterton was remarkably prolific but perhaps his most famous creation is Father Brown. Within this character Chesterton’s clever writing and profound ideas reveal truths, often with humour as the detective priest pursues the answers to his cases.

    The Marxism of Che Guevara -...

     “Excellent. . . .The book gives one a clear understanding of the relationship of Guevara's thought to traditional Russian and Marxist philosophy.” —Choice Reviews   In this seminal exploration of Che Guevara’s contributions to Marxist thinking, Michael Löwy traces Che's ideas about Marxism both as they related to Latin America and to more general philosophical, political, and economic issues. Now revised and updated, this edition includes a chapter on Guevara's search for a new paradigm of socialism and a substantive essay by Peter McLaren on Che’s continued relevance today. Löwy portrays Guevara as a revolutionary humanist who considered all political questions from an internationalist viewpoint. For him, revolutionary movements in Latin America were part of a world process of emancipation. Löwy considers especially Che's views on the contradiction between socialist planning and the law of value in the Cuban economy and his search for an alternative road to the “actually existing socialism” of the Stalinist and post-Stalinist Soviet bloc. Che’s varied occupations—doctor and economist, revolutionary and banker, agitator and ambassador, industrial organizer and guerrilla fighter—were expressions of a deep commitment to social change. This book eloquently captures his views on humanity, his contributions to the theory of revolutionary warfare, and his ideas about society’s transition to socialism, offering a cohesive, nuanced introduction to the range of Guevara's thought.   “An excellent classroom tool for anyone teaching about Latin America or revolution.” ―Science & Society “[This book] provides us with the picture of [Guevara’s] great, flexible, and searching mind.” —Carleton Beals   “Michael Löwy’s brief but penetrating book takes Che Guevara not as a romantic adventurer but as a serious revolutionary militant.” ―Telos
