For fans of True Detective and Ozark—“Once you’re in the novel’s grip, it’s difficult to break free. A predator thriller with a difference, by a rising star in the field.” —Kirkus Reviews
To stop a serial killer terrorizing the hills of rural Washington state, retired sheriff Amos Fielding must re-enter a world he’s tried desperately to escape

It’s 1989 and Amos Fielding, onetime sheriff of Oscar, Iowa, is in his early seventies and grieving the recent loss of his wife, Sara. He packs up his few belongings and heads to a ranch in the far northwest corner of Washington State. The farther he can get from Oscar and his years there as sheriff, the better. Eager to escape painful memories, Fielding throws himself into the daily chores of a gentleman rancher. But there is evil afoot, as dark as any he faced in Oscar.

A cold-blooded, amoral psychopath has been stalking troubled young women in the surrounding woods, staging elaborate scenes of his crimes. The local chief of police has turned a blind eye to the cases. In fact, the only law enforcement agents genuinely concerned about justice are Dee Batey (a recovering alcoholic and former detective turned wildlife officer) and Philip Wilson (an overly ambitious and weirdly obsessed young Seattle FBI agent). It is Batey and Fielding's growing friendship that provides the lure that will pull Fielding back into the world he so desperately wants to escape as the three team up to hunt a killer and stop the predator from finding new prey.

🍗 Leftover food blogger and meal prep expert Remy Nance is hosting a "Second Helpings" cooking competition when the contest's celebrity judge—a notoriously wasteful food personality—is found dead in the test kitchen, surrounded by suspiciously arranged Thanksgiving leftovers. The police suspect food poisoning, but Remy notices the leftovers have been deliberately temperature-abused and the victim's social media posts contain coded hashtags about food waste fraud. With her blog's reputation on the line and the sustainable food community in chaos, Remy must reheat this cold case to boiling point. Assisted by her foodie followers and the handsome food safety inspector analyzing bacterial growth, Remy uncovers a scheme involving food waste embezzlement, fake charity donations, and a plot to sabotage sustainable chefs. From suspicious mold patterns that reveal intentional spoilage to temperature logs that don't match safety standards, every reheated dish tells a story. But when Remy discovers the victim was systematically diverting donated food to landfill while claiming massive tax write-offs, she realizes the killer is protecting hunger relief efforts more nourishing than any five-star meal. Libby Madsen, professional massage therapist and co-owner of the luxurious Dharma Inspired Day Spa, has probably heard it all. During what she thinks of as ‘tabletop confessions’ her clients often talk about way more of their personal lives than she really wants to hear. So when a regular, Maggie Crenshaw, talks about how her daughter went away on a camping trip with friends, it’s just so much chatter. But when Maggie says Isobel didn’t return home on time, is not answering her phone, and that the young woman is diabetic and really needs her meds. Libby offers to pick up the medications at Maggie’s house and deliver them—she and her Labrador puppy, Shadow, are going camping in the same area and it’s no trouble at all.
Except when Libby and Shadow arrive at the campground, Isobel is nowhere to be found, and no one there has seen her or the group of friends she claimed to be traveling with. Libby enlists the help of handsome Forest Ranger Greg Lawson, but even he can’t find anyone who has seen the girl. The fact that she’s now been without her insulin for several days is worrisome, and Greg initiates a Search and Rescue operation.
Libby and Shadow join Greg and the volunteers to search the adjoining camping areas. Some shady characters and a few clues do turn up. But no Isobel. Libby becomes convinced that something more sinister is going on and she’s determined to find out what has happened, little knowing that her own life may be in danger as she gets too close to the truth.
