First published in 2012, Borders: A Very Short Introduction began with the premise that "we live in a very bordered world." The intervening decade has witnessed a flurry of events and developments that continue to highlight the centrality of borders in contemporary domestic and international affairs, as well as the interstices between the two, including sudden surges in migrant and refugees flows; renewed emphasis on traditional border security and wall construction; growing tensions concerning maritime sovereignty; rapid advances in cybersecurity, surveillance, and biometrics; expanded detention and deportation infrastructures; proliferation of transborder organizations; revived populist and nationalist sentiments; and protectionist and integrationist trade practices, to name some prominent examples from recent headlines.

This revised edition accounts for recent developments including Brexit, the 2015 migration crisis across Europe, efforts to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico, growing isolationist and nativist sentiments, demands for indigenous homelands, transnational protest movements, Russian cross-border incursions, and insurgencies and rebellions across much of North Africa and Southwest Asia.

In an awesome meeting of minds, cultural theorists Stuart Hall and bell hooks met for a series of wide-ranging conversations on what Hall sums up as "life, love, death, sex." From the trivial to the profound, across boundaries of age, sexualities and genders, hooks and Hall dissect topics and themes of continual contemporary relevance, including feminism, home and homecoming, class, black masculinity, family, politics, relationships, and teaching. In their fluid and honest dialogue they push and pull each other as well as the listener, and the result is a book that speaks to the power of conversation as a place of critical pedagogy.

    Alighieri Dante

Convivio ("The Banquet") is Dante Alighieri's ambitious and unfinished philosophical work—a rich intellectual feast designed to nourish the minds and spirits of its readers. Written in the early years of his exile, this remarkable text reveals Dante not only as a poet of transcendent vision but also as a thinker deeply committed to sharing knowledge, wisdom, and moral insight with a wider audience.

Conceived as a grand "banquet" of learning, the work combines lyrical poetry with extensive prose commentary. Each section begins with one of Dante's canzoni (long lyric poems), followed by a detailed explanation that unfolds its philosophical meaning. Through this innovative structure, Dante invites readers to the table of reason, offering sustenance drawn from classical philosophy, Christian theology, ethics, astronomy, and metaphysics. His goal is both educational and democratic: to make the treasures of wisdom accessible beyond the narrow circle of Latin scholars.

At the heart of Convivio lies a profound exploration of human nobility and the pursuit of true happiness. Dante challenges the idea that nobility is inherited through bloodlines, arguing instead that genuine nobility arises from virtue, moral excellence, and the cultivation of the intellect. Knowledge, in his vision, is a pathway to freedom—an ennobling force that elevates the soul and directs it toward its highest good.

Throughout the work, Dante reflects on love, philosophy, and the structure of the cosmos, weaving together influences from Aristotle, Boethius, and medieval scholastic thought. He examines the relationship between reason and faith, presenting philosophy as a guide that leads the human mind toward greater understanding. The text also offers personal insight into Dante's life during exile, revealing how his separation from Florence shaped his intellectual development and deepened his commitment to truth.

Though originally planned as a much larger project, Convivio remains incomplete, adding a sense of poignancy to its pages. Yet even in its unfinished form, it stands as one of the most important philosophical works of the medieval period. It bridges the worlds of poetry and scholarship, vernacular language and classical tradition, personal reflection and universal inquiry.

Scholarly yet passionate, systematic yet lyrical, Convivio is a testament to Dante's belief that knowledge is a shared feast meant to uplift all who partake in it. Through its thoughtful analysis and visionary spirit, the work illuminates the enduring quest for wisdom, virtue, and intellectual enlightenment—an invitation that continues to resonate with readers centuries after its creation.

Foxxxy Rule #2: Don’t mix business with pleasure
Life has not been kind to Adrian Vasquez. He spends his days hiding the truth of his sexuality from his homophobic brother, sticking to every rule of his probation so he isn’t sent back to jail, and keeping out of the crosshairs of Los Hermanos del Diablo—Boston’s most notorious Mexican gang, of which his brother is a prominent member—all in the name of survival. Thankfully, he has his nights working at The Foxxxy Gentlemen’s Club as an escort and exotic dancer to keep him sane. It may not be his dream job, but under the neon glow of the Foxxxy stage, Adrian can pretend to be someone else, even if it’s only for a little while.
Life has not been easy for Taylor Greer. Born queer and intersex to a Southern Baptist preacher, they left home at fifteen to escape conversion therapy, masquerading as a “Christian summer camp.” After surviving four years on the unforgiving streets of Boston, they struggle to get their life back on track for a chance at a better future. Working two jobs to stay afloat and studying every spare minute to pass their GED exam, Taylor has little time for a social life, let alone a love life. But who needs romance when living is this complicated?
When Taylor and Adrian’s paths meet with a literal crash, a bruised plantain is the catalyst for a connection they’re both starving for. Dating a coworker never ends well, but some forces cannot be fought, and Adrian and Taylor can only ignore the magnetic pull between them for so long before physics wins.
Adrian knows better than to mix business with pleasure. Taylor knows better than to get involved with a colleague. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and some rules are made to be broken.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin: The Icon...

    Harriet Beecher Stowe

Uncle Tom's Cabin is an antislavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in two volumes in 1852, the novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the U.S., and is said to have "helped lay the groundwork for the [American] Civil War".

Stowe, a Connecticutborn woman of English descent, was part of the religious Beecher family and an active abolitionist. She wrote the sentimental novel to depict the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love could overcome slavery. The novel focuses on the character of Uncle Tom, a longsuffering black slave around whom the stories of the other characters revolve.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was the bestselling novel and the second bestselling book of the 19th century, following the Bible, and is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. The impact attributed to the book was so great that a likely apocryphal story arose of Abraham Lincoln meeting Stowe at the start of the Civil War and declaring, "So this is the little lady who started this great war."

The book and the plays it inspired helped popularize a number of negative stereotypes about black people including that of the namesake character "Uncle Tom", with the term now used to describe an excessively subservient person. These associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have, to an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a "vital antislavery tool". However, the novel stands as a "landmark" in protest literature with later books such as The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and Silent Spring by Rachel Carson owing a large debt to it A oneofakind audio encounter for lovers of history, literature, spiritual texts, and inspirational writing.
