Summary

City Sounds explores the pervasive issue of urban noise, examining its origins, effects, and surprising importance within our cities. The book argues that noise pollution is not just an annoyance, but a significant environmental factor affecting human health, behavior, and urban ecology. For instance, exposure to prolonged city sounds can lead to sleep disturbances, stress, and even cardiovascular issues.

The book begins by laying the groundwork with the physics of sound, explaining concepts like frequency and amplitude, and then traces the historical evolution of urban noise from pre-industrial times to our modern, technology-driven soundscapes. City Sounds systematically builds its case by examining the primary sources of noise, such as transportation and construction, and detailing their acoustic properties. It also considers the effects of noise on urban wildlife, emphasizing the interconnectedness of our environment.

Unique in its approach, City Sounds emphasizes proactive solutions. The book presents strategies for mitigating noise pollution through urban design, noise barriers, and traffic management. By connecting to fields like public health, urban planning, and ecology, the book reinforces the importance of creating quieter, healthier, and more livable cities through informed urban planning and public policy.

Welcome to My Life: The Sitcom, featuring the panderings and ponderings of Yours Truly, Chadd Wheat.

Believe it or not, many of you have actually asked for this book. I don't know if you intend on using it for the bottom of the birdcage, evidence in impending legal actions, or simply as a guide to living frivolously. Whatever the case, I hope you enjoy it.

I started writing My Life: The Sitcom in 2002. Most of my articles, as published in The Lebanon Reporter and elsewhere, are my direct observations on the craziness that surrounds my life. Nearly all the events contained herein are actually true, with the names sometimes changed to protect the ignorant.

People often ask me where I get the inspiration to write my ludicrous columns. After rubbing my chin and looking sage, I usually say something like, "by consuming too much reality television, caffeine and other borderline hallucinogens.

Ha, ha! Just kidding, local law enforcement! As a matter of fact, I never watch reality television!

    Song Dynasty - Innovation and...

The Song Dynasty (960–1279) emerged from a period of political fragmentation and military strife known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907–960). Following the collapse of the Tang Dynasty in 907, China was divided among competing warlords and regional states, each vying for power. The unification of China under the Song Dynasty marked the beginning of a new era of stability, economic prosperity, and cultural flourishing.
The dynasty was founded by Emperor Taizu (Zhao Kuangyin), a capable military general who seized power in 960 through a relatively peaceful coup known as the Chenqiao Mutiny. As the commander of the Later Zhou army, Taizu was persuaded by his loyal officers to take the throne and establish a new dynasty. Unlike previous rulers who relied on military force to maintain control, Taizu implemented policies aimed at reducing the power of the military aristocracy while strengthening the centralized government. One of his first major reforms was ensuring that top military commanders were replaced by civilian officials, significantly reducing the likelihood of future military coups.
Although the early Song rulers sought to consolidate power within China, they faced constant threats from neighboring states. The Khitan-led Liao Dynasty controlled much of the northern frontier, while the Western Xia and later the Jurchen-led Jin Dynasty posed additional challenges. The Song, unable to achieve military dominance over these rival states, often resorted to diplomacy, alliances, and even paying tribute in exchange for peace. This reliance on diplomacy over warfare became a defining characteristic of Song foreign policy.
