Summary

The Fifties were a difficult time to be a married woman and daughters in particular carried the burden of this unhappiness. Forbidden to socialise, Alice, the seventeen-year-old heroine of ‘The Dress’, defies her mother and escapes to a glamorous and glitzy party but is terrified she will be shamed, humiliated and dragged home. She thinks she has got away with it, then something unexpectedly dreadful happens. This mesmerising and unforgettable novel describes what it was like to be young after the Second World War and the tensions in society as the more colourful Sixties begin to unfold.

Ever since we found the two Outcasts, it's been my goal to get them to join our beach tribe. Handsome, impossible Juth has resisted all my efforts to recruit him and his small son. He's made it very clear that he doesn't belong with us.

But when I'm trapped at Juth's side as the beach is invaded by monsters, everything changes. He talks to me instead of pointedly ignoring me. We become friends. Heck, we even share a few stolen kisses. And when the rescue party arrives, he announces to everyone that I'm his mate and he's joining the tribe.

Which is great except . . . I never agreed to anything? If I point out I'm not Juth's mate, he'll pack up and leave with his son. He sure won't give me more of those toe-curling kisses or touch me like it's the greatest thing that's ever happened to him.

    So . . . I guess I'm mated? Because I'm not sure I can give any of that—or Juth—up.

Fu Hongxue was a man of contradictions—a cripple with a lame leg and prone to epileptic fits, yet one of the most feared and revered figures in the martial arts world. Armed with a dull, unassuming black saber, he was unmatched in skill, leaving only silence and corpses in his wake whenever his blade was drawn. His fame made him a constant target for challengers eager to test their mettle against a legend.
But one fateful day, Fu Hongxue made an uncharacteristic choice: he spared a life he was meant to take. This single act of mercy unraveled a web of conspiracy, setting in motion events that would shake the martial arts world to its core and force Fu Hongxue to confront his own destiny.
