Summary

Robert Day Jr. thrives on the thrill of the chase, lurking in the shadows, his mind obsessively searching, seeking out and feasting upon a target's hidden past traumas. Clothed in a black desire to control, devour and entirely possess his victims, he greedily absorbs their vulnerability to measure the perfect ripeness for exploitation. The compulsion to assume absolute power stems from a desire to quash his own raging insecurities that persistently plague him. It seizes him like a magnet's invisible force, compelling him to drag them into his own endless cycle of deception and destruction.

It is not his fault if they readily accept the carefully crafted narratives he creates without any need for verification or validation. Yes, it fuels his twisted sense of power, but he has no sympathy for them. The ease to condition, manipulate and violate them amuses him and serves to convince him he is absolved of any wrongdoing.

But, has that one fatal reaction finally exposed the hidden truth of his past? Will the infection of the poison he has spread be unearthed like the mud of a landslide? And more importantly, has he commanded his own downfall or will DSI Shona Williams and DCI Dion Jacobi be the ones to strike the final blow?

    America didn't fall. It fractured.
It’s been three months since the Trigger Flu tore through the population. The cities are graveyards. The highways belong to the dead. And beyond the ruins, something worse has risen: warlords, rogue generals, cartels, and cult leaders clawing to hold kingdoms of their own.
Army Ranger Jack Miller is one of the last soldiers still fighting. Fresh out of Ranger school, he parachutes onto the tarmac at NAS Norfolk with a four-man team, a rifle he can't trust, and one job: help his unit retake the airfield for what's left of the U.S. military.
Every mission reclaims a piece of the country. Every failure hands more ground to men like Colonel Marcus Hale—a man once trusted as a leader in the Continuation of Government plan, now convinced democracy was the real disease. And he's raising a militia that answers only to him.
The infected are relentless. The warlords are ruthless. Rebuilding America will cost everything—and Miller hasn't even made rank yet.
A veteran-authored military post-apocalyptic thriller for readers of Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Michael Stephen Fuchs—where the dead aren’t the only enemy.

"What grips readers is the enormous amount of emotion [Fossum] works up as we get closer and closer to reliving the murderous event in question . . . Hell Fire is close to heartbreaking, and there are not many novels, thrillers or otherwise, you can say that about." —Los Angeles Times

A gruesome tableau awaits Inspector Konrad Sejer in the oppressive summer heat: a woman and a young boy lay dead in a pool of blood near a dank trailer. The motivation behind the deaths of Bonnie Hayden and her five-year-old son, Simon, is mysterious—there is no sign of robbery. Who would brutally stab a defenseless woman and her child? In a parallel story, another mother, Mass Malthe, navigates life with her adult son, Eddie. It's a relationship some would call too close, since Eddie's father, a man he obsesses over, abandoned them many years ago. As Sejer searches for the truth behind the seemingly senseless killings, Hell Fire deftly probes why we lie to those closest to us, and what drives people to commit the most horrific of crimes.
