Summary

Jules Verne's "The Greatest Adventure Books of All Time - Jules Verne Collection" encapsulates the author's pioneering spirit in science fiction and adventure literature. This compilation features classic tales such as "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," characterized by Verne's unique blend of vivid imagination and meticulous scientific detail. Written during the late 19th century, a time rife with advancements in exploration and technology, the collection engages readers with intricate plots that are both thrilling and educational, laying the groundwork for modern speculative fiction. Jules Verne, often hailed as one of the fathers of science fiction, was born in 1828 in France. His early affinity for literature and science was influenced by his familial background and the radical changes in science and technology occurring during his lifetime. Verne's resolve to explore uncharted territories through literature emerges from both his fascination with the possibilities of mankind and a deep commentary on the human condition in relation to the wonders of nature and invention. For readers of adventure and speculative fiction, this collection is an essential gateway into Verne's ingenious mind and his lasting impact on literature. These stories not only entertain but also inspire curiosity about the unknown, making it a must-read for any literature enthusiast.

On such a night as this, a straggler from a theatre was wandering in the cool calming night remembering a lost daughter who he'd lost many years ago on a night like this. This day, to be exact, 28 years earlier. She was murdered with her husband as they walked the street he was in. He came as he always did this night to lay a rose for them. He did so unbothered, for all the times he had come. Before that night. He pulled out an old locket and looked at it sadly and opened it, looking at the pictures inside it. They were his daughter and her husband. The father pulled a red rose from his inside coat pocket and lay the rose on the wet road. As the father knelt laying the rose there was a noise nearby on the road like a splash in the puddle, he looked up and saw a man with a gun trained on him.

The story begins when Hilton Cubitt of Ridling Thorpe Manor in Norfolk visits Sherlock Holmes and gives him a piece of paper with a mysterious sequence of stick figures.
Cubitt explains to Holmes and Dr. Watson that he has recently married an American woman named Elsie Patrick. Before the wedding, she had asked her husband-to-be never to ask about her past, as she had had some "very disagreeable associations" in her life, although she said that there was nothing that she was personally ashamed of. Their marriage had been a happy one until the messages began to arrive, first mailed from the United States and then appearing in the garden.
The messages had made Elsie very afraid but she did not explain the reasons for her fear, and Cubitt insisted on honouring his promise not to ask about Elsie's life in the United States. Holmes examines all of the occurrences of the dancing figures, and they provide him with an important clue—he realises that they form a substitution cipher and cracks the code by frequency analysis. The last of the messages causes Holmes to fear that the Cubitts are in immediate danger
