  From a staunchly Republican family, Michael O'Hanrahan's outwardly quiet and serious demeanour concealed a burning desire to see an independent Ireland. He was instrumental in setting up the first branch of the Gaelic League in Carlow. Michael also helped found the workingman's club in Carlow, which he left when they decided to admit a British soldier. After moving to Dublin, he played important roles in both Sinn Fein and the Irish Volunteers. As quartermaster of the Volunteers, he was responsible for the procurement of many of the arms used in the Easter Rising. Michael O'Hanrahan was also a talented journalist and novelist whose development was cut short by his execution in 1916.
   In this new biography Conor Kostick brings to life a man who helped launch the 1916 Rising.

  What an incredible journey this book takes you through. I could almost feel the pain that would be brought about by these manic episodes, and I have a deep felt respect that she was able to pull out of it. Talk about determination and the Power of the mind and will! I also have lots of respect for Rob in sticking by Tilly through it all. It’s certainly not easy to be with someone who is diagnosed bipolar or Borderline Personality Disorder, and in most cases, the relationship doesn’t survive. BPD is further explained in other books such as “Stop Walking on Eggshells”, that will help you understand what it’s all about, and to appreciate even more what Tilly endured all of these years. Coming from myself, who holds a PhD in Applied Sciences, I am quite familiar with chemical imbalances, and I can surely understand and appreciate the pain she endured, and how those around her could feel helpless in these moments of trouble.The book takes you through the years leading up to today, which I think is crucial to understanding that there was no real reason for the manic moments. Like Tilly, you must want the change badly enough to make the necessary steps towards it. I found this book to be an incredibly good read, and I would highly recommend it: either as a foundation to help in overcoming the condition, or to broaden your knowledge through someone else’s eyes. Thank you, Tilly, for painstakingly telling us your story, and I know you’ll stay true to your path.

  Sir Frederick Treves, 1st Baronet, GCVO, CH, CB (1853 – 1923) was a prominent British surgeon of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, best known for his friendship with Joseph Merrick, "the Elephant Man"."The Elephant Man" is Treves' own first-hand account of how he met and befriended Joseph Merrick (whom he mistakenly calls John Merrick), a young man with very severe physical deformities, who was being exhibited as a side-show freak as being half-man half-elephant. Treves initially invited Merrick to his rooms in the London Hospital so as to examine him, and to ensure Merrick's admittance he gave him his card. Two years later, when Merrick arrived back in London, abandoned by his freak-show handler and chased by a mob, he showed the police who rescued him Treves' card. Through this fortuitous chance, Merrick came to live at the London hospital under the care and guardianship of Treves. The two men developed a great friendship and Treves was astonished to discover that Merrick was not only a highly intelligent man, but also a hopeless romantic.
