A riveting look behind the mask of an NHL goalie, The Save of My Life offers understanding and hope to anyone living with mental illness
By the time he was twenty-two years old, goaltender Corey Hirsch had realized his childhood dream of playing in the NHL, won an Olympic medal and drunk from the Stanley Cup. While he excelled on the ice, out of the net Hirsch was plagued by persistent dark thoughts and ceaseless anxiety. On days when he could barely get out of bed, he was able to push aside the endless loop of dark thoughts running inside his brain long enough to win a game. But as soon as he got back home, the agonizing cycle started all over again. And it continued, until finally he was able to confide in a team trainer who helped him get the professional treatment he needed. Diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, Hirsch was able to embark on the rocky road to recovery. As one of the first professional athletes to talk openly about mental health, Hirsch wrote about his OCD for the Players’ Tribune. His piece remains one of their most-read articles ever.
As Hirsch says, “I am not insane. I am not a bad person. I am not weak. I have an illness, and there is a treatment.”

Scottish immigrants brought the game “across the pond” in the 18th century. Since then the roaring game has amassed its fair share of amusing and interesting stories, facts and anecdotes:

The flamboyant curling character Paul Gowsell once ordered a pizza to ice level during a match, briefly earning him the nickname “Pizza Paul”

Legendary Brier journalist Cactus Jack Wells turned down a Hockey Night in Canada play-by-play job in order to continue covering the Brier and Winnipeg Blue Bomber games.

In 1912, the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax served as a temporary morgue for recovered bodies in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster.

In cashspiels, curlers win money, but in bonspiels, they win things like cars, T-bone steaks or new curling stones

Canada is said to be the only documented place where the iron curling “stone” was used.

Before the 1988 Olympic Trials, the Canadian Curling Association informed the “The Wrench,” Ed Werenich, that he would have to lose weight if he qualified for the Olympics.

Canada invited Scotland to tour Canada in a curling tournament in 1858, but didn’t end up making the overseas journey until 44 years later in 1902.

Curling did not become an official Olympic sport until 1998 in Nagano

In 2009, NBC will host a curling reality show called Rockstar Curling to determine who will represent the United States at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

    And much more…

“Telling them what Jimmy did... it’s the most important thing you can tell a young player who is representing Manchester United,” - Sir Alex Ferguson

This updated, family authorised biography of Manchester United hero Jimmy Murphy celebrates the career of the man who managed the club after the Munich air disaster and took charge of Wales at the 1958 World Cup.

Alongside Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson, nobody in the long history of Manchester United is as important as Jimmy Murphy.

As legendary Manchester United manager Busby lay in an oxygen tent in his hospital bed, recovering from the horror of the Munich plane crash, he clutched the friend of his close friend and faithful right-hand-man Murphy. Murphy stepped into Busby’s shoes and answered United’s call in their hour of need. More than that, he provided the spark which would see a phoenix spectacularly rise from the flames.

Murphy would be at Busby’s side as the club famously conquered England and Europe, driven by a new generation of Babes. Murphy would remain United’s assistant manager up to 1971, going on to become a club scout, unearthing and recruiting famous talents like Gordon Hill and Steve Coppell. In his other role as Wales’ football manager, he would mastermind his country’s appearance in the World Cup finals – taking Wales to the brink of the semi-finals in 1958.

The Man Who Kept The Red Flag Flying has been written in full cooperation with Murphy’s family, with unique insight from sons Nick and Jimmy Junior. It features contributions and comments from Sir Alex Ferguson, George Best, Tommy Docherty and Ron Atkinson, among many, and rare excerpts from the Daily Mirror and Manchester Evening News archives. This updated title will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Manchester United’s 1965 First Division title and the unveiling of a statue dedicated to Murphy at Old Trafford in 2023 in its honour.

Discover what the Bible says about participating, competing, and enjoying sports. Millions of us love sports—playing, supporting, watching. But have you ever thought about how your love for sports connects with your love for Jesus? Some of us feel a bit guilty for loving sports so much, especially when there are so many other ways in which we could be using our time to serve God. Others see it simply as a great way to share the gospel (while having fun). And many of us have never really thought about it at all! This book will show you what the Bible says. You’ll discover a more liberating approach than feeling a bit guilty, a deeper approach than seeing sports as only an evangelistic opportunity, and a better approach than not linking your faith and your love of sports at all. Starting with asking why God created sports in the first place, Spiritual Game Plan explores how the gospel impacts and transforms the way we think and play. You'll discover how to enjoy sports even more as you let God shape your perspective, and you'll see how he can use your sports to grow and shape you as his follower. Includes lots of stories from elite to everyday athletes, as well as chapters on specific topics such as sports on Sundays. In addition to teaching for athletes, there is advice for parents, coaches, and fans. This is a great gift for Christians who love sports.
