Summary

Frank Wills's life is spiraling out of control. A former Marine sergeant struggling with civilian life, his marriage is on the rocks, his job prospects are dwindling, and his anger issues are escalating. After intervening in a street altercation, Frank is mysteriously abducted by strange men in black and wakes up in Burning River—an otherworldly detention facility where inmates face bizarre justice for their crimes.

As Frank navigates this nightmarish prison beneath Lake Erie, he forms uneasy alliances with fellow captives, including the charismatic pod leader Chucho. But the enigmatic Warden—who claims to be the archangel Gabriel—has special plans for Frank. To survive, he must confront not only the dangerous inmates and sadistic guards but also the demons of his past—including a horrific incident from his combat days in Iraq that he's tried desperately to bury.

In this liminal space between punishment and redemption, Frank must decide whether to fight the system or submit to it, all while questioning what's real and what's hallucination. As the boundaries between justice and vengeance blur, Frank faces his ultimate moral test: Can he escape this metaphysical purgatory, or is he doomed to remain trapped in a prison of his own making?

A haunting exploration of guilt, PTSD, and the human capacity for change, Burning River asks profound questions about accountability, forgiveness, and whether anyone is beyond redemption.

"He went to sleep a commoner and woke up the master of the world."

In 1897, a man named Graham falls into a profound trance that lasts for 203 years. When he finally awakens in the year 2100, he discovers that his modest bank account has grown through the power of compound interest into the greatest fortune in history. He is now the "Sleeper," the legal owner of half the world. But while he slept, a shadowy "White Council" has ruled in his name, turning London into a tiered megacity of technological marvels and crushing inequality. Thrust into the heart of a violent revolution led by the charismatic Ostrog, Graham must decide if he is a savior, a puppet, or a tyrant.

The Birth of the Megacity: Wells' vision of the future is startlingly modern. He imagines a world of "Aeropiles" (flying machines), kinetic advertising, and a globalized economy. The London of 2100 is a city-state where the natural world has been paved over, and the population is controlled through sensory stimulation and the "Labour Company"—a corporate entity that has effectively re-established slavery through debt.

A Prophecy of Revolution: Unlike Wells' more optimistic utopias, The Sleeper Awakes is a gritty exploration of power. It examines how populist movements can be co-opted by new dictators and how the "working man" is often traded from one master to another. Graham's journey from a bewildered Victorian to a revolutionary leader is a gripping study in the responsibility of wealth and the difficulty of true liberation.

Witness the dawn of the corporate dystopia. Purchase "The Sleeper Awakes" today and see the future that H.G. Wells feared.

When Chicago mobster Don Carlo Marchese is found hanging from the 18th story window of the Blackstone Hotel, Reporter Paul Crawford of the Chicago Sun Times is assigned to investigate. He finds out that Don Carlo was brokering art works for the Vatican's Pope Emeritus Honorius V (Josef Cardinal Schroder). Because of all the innumerate sexual molestation lawsuits that have been settled by many archdioceses' internationally, the Vatican has been in dire need of money, and began the process of liquidating Vatican Museum artworks. Last July, Hermann Kalkschmidt, the son of a former Nazi officer, is found dead in his Munich apartment. Hidden in his attic for the last seventy-five years, are forty-two paintings stolen by the Nazis from Florence's Uffizi Gallery in 1943. His second cousin, Chicago art dealer Wolfgang Schmidt is suspected of having his cousin killed by the professional assassin Stefano Iannucci for possession of these paintings. The Pope Emeritus, "Papa Onorio" believes that these stolen paintings really belong to the Vatican Museum. He decides to try to recover the stolen art collection, believing that their recovery back to Rome would restore his abysmal public image. He turns to Chicago mobster Don Carlo Marchese to retrieve these works of art. When Marchese double crosses Papa Onorio, he hires "contract killer" Stefano Iannucci to stop at nothing, including murder, to retrieve those paintings. Meanwhile, Florence's Giammarco crime family is in search of the Uffizi art collection as well, in conflict with the Vatican over their true ownership. Blood and dead bodies start appearing everywhere, from Chicago to Munich to Detroit to Florence, and the search for these paintings, and especially Fra Filippo Lippi's valuable masterpiece "Demons of Divine Wrath" remain at large.
