Summary

Eustace Budgell's 'The Coverley Papers, From 'The Spectator'' is a seminal collection that encapsulates the elegant wit and social commentary of early 18th-century England through the exploits of the quintessential English country gentleman, Sir Roger de Coverley. In a series of essays, Budgell, along with Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, employs a polished literary style that masterfully intertwines allegory and realism. This compilation not only offers a vivid portrait of contemporary society but also reflects the era's burgeoning literary landscape, shaping the essay as a revered literary form. Joseph Addison, revered for his contributions to English literature, collaborated closely with Eustace Budgell and Richard Steele in the creation of 'The Spectator', with Addison being credited with the conception of Sir Roger de Coverley, a character that has since entered the cultural lexicon as an embodiment of the complexities and charms of the country gentry. Addison's profound insights into human nature and social mores, developed through his playwright skills and political career, are echoed throughout Budgell's presentation of de Coverley, underlining the timeless relevance of the former's original vision. 'The Coverley Papers, From 'The Spectator'' comes highly recommended to those interested in the evolution of the modern essay and aficionados of English literature. Budgell's nuanced portrayal of Sir Roger de Coverley not only offers an entertaining and astute reflection on 18th-century life but also serves as a significant study in character development. The book beckons readers with an interest in social history and the literary arts to delve into a work that continues to resonate with contemporary audiences through its incisive social observations and enduring wit.

    ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
"Sarah's Key" by Tatiana de Rosnay is a poignant novel that intertwines two stories set sixty years apart. In 2002, Julia Jarmond, an American journalist living in Paris, is tasked with writing an article about the Vel' d'Hiv' roundup, a tragic event in which thousands of Jewish families were arrested and deported from Paris in 1942. As Julia delves into her research, she uncovers a personal connection to this dark chapter of history: her in-laws' apartment was once the home of a Jewish family who perished in the Holocaust. Julia's investigation leads her to the story of Sarah Starzynski, a ten-year-old girl who was the sole survivor of her family's deportation. The novel explores themes of guilt, memory, and the enduring impact of the Holocaust on both survivors and subsequent generations. As Julia uncovers the truth about Sarah's fate, she is forced to confront the secrets of her husband's family and the complexities of France's wartime past.

Larry – Simply Larry tells the story of Fr Larry McDonnell, an inspiring Irish Salesian Priest and the Headmaster of Salesian High School in Manzini, Swaziland. For more than two decades, Larry was instrumental in the growth and development of hundreds of Swazi boys, as well as many from South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe who sought refuge in Swaziland during the apartheid era. Many of the boys whose lives he touched, directly and indirectly, are now prominent policy, political and business leaders in South Africa and the region. He also played a crucial, though largely unsung, role in the liberation of South Africa. Salesian was also an academic refuge for many South African, Namibian and Zimbabwean teachers. At various times the school harboured operatives of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), Swapo and the PAC; such as Stanley Mabizela and General Keith Mokoape of MK – a most recent Luthuli Awardee in Silver, both ANC; Arthur Pickering of Swapo as well as Rosette ‘RB’ Nziba and Dini Sobukwe of PAC, respectively. The key period in this account is from 1970, when Larry arrived at the School, to the mid-1990s, following his tenure as Headmaster and his retirement to technical education. As a deeply religious person, caught up in struggle politics while trying to give the boys, in his care, the best possible start in life. Larry’s roots in the Irish struggle for liberation from British rule and in the trauma of the 19th-century Potato Crisis, gave him an acute consciousness of South Africa’s liberation process.
